CLEVELAND —
Jada Wright's career-high six blocks were not enough, as the Wright State women's basketball team fell to Cleveland State 86-60 on Monday night inside the Wolstein Center.
In addition to her six blocks, Wright stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and three steals.
Jada Roberson chipped in with a team-leading 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, while
Channing Chappell went 6-of-6 at the free throw en route to 11 points. Her marks in free throw attempts and makes were both career highs.
Edecia Beck helped out with six points, six rebounds, and three assists.
As a team, the Raiders (2-18, 1-14 HL) blocked a season-high nine shots, their most in a game since the 2019-20 season. WSU also bested Cleveland State (15-4, 10-3 HL) in steals, 9-7, paced by Roberson with four.
Despite an active showing defensively, CSU led the battle on the boards 63-37. The Viking offense shot 41-percent (31-of-75) from the field and 33% (6-of-18) on 3-pointers. CSU's bench was responsible for 58% of its offensive output with 50 points.
Meanwhile, Wright State struggled to shoot the ball, going 31% (23-of-74) overall and 17% (4-of-23) from outside the arc. The Raiders were at their best at the charity stripe, netting 10 free throws on 11 attempts.
WSU opened the Horizon League contest in front 5-0 following consecutive baskets by Wright and
Destyne Jackson, but Cleveland State gained a narrow 11-10 advantage by the first media timeout. The home squad grew its lead to 18-12 by the end of the first quarter, highlighted by a 5-0 run.
CSU opened the second quarter on a 13-4 run to extend its edge to 31-16 at the 5:55 minute mark. A pair of free throws made by Roberson broke the run, but the Vikings cushioned their lead to 43-20 thanks to a 12-2 scoring spurt and finished the half on top 45-25.
The Raiders attempted to rally, shortening their deficit to 61-44 with 2:08 to go in the third quarter following a 3-pointer by
Jordan Stanley. However, Cleveland State regained control, leading 68-46 with one quarter remaining. Wright blocked her final two shots in the quarter, upping her total to six.
CSU outscored Wright State 18-14 in the fourth quarter on its way to an 86-60 victory. Roberson came away with three of her four steals in the final period.
WSU will return home to face IUPUI on Thursday, February 10, at 6 p.m. The game will televise on ESPN+.
