
Raiders grab team & individual titles in Orlando

ORLANDO – The Wright State golf team ran away from the field at the Orlando Invitational, finishing at five-under par and 22 strokes ahead of the nearest team to grab the title, while Tyler Goecke captured individual honors.

The Raiders saw five individuals finish inside the top 15 as they got a preview of the Horizon League Championship course and competition. Seven other Horizon League foes were part of the 11-team field this week at the El Campeon Course at the Mission Hills Resort & Club, where the HL Championship will be held in late April.

Wright State carded a 286 team score on Tuesday for its five-under finish, with Stetson the next closest team at 16-over. A trio of Horizon League teams rounded out the top five – Purdue Fort Wayne (+17), Oakland (+19) and Youngstown State (+25).

Goecke tallied a final round 68 on Tuesday behind five birdies to springboard to the individual title at six-under, while Bryce Haney finished tied for fourth at even par for the tournament following a final round one-over 73. Mikkel Mathiesen jumped five spots on Tuesday to finish tied for 10th after a final round even par 72, finishing at three-over for the tournament and bouncing back from an opening round 77 on Monday.

Cole Corder carded a final round 75 to finish four-over in a tie for 13th, while Davis Root jumped six spots on Tuesday into a tie for 15th with a round of 73 to finish five-over for the tournament. Playing as an individual, Andrew Flynn tallied a final round 79 to finish at 16-over (t50).

Goecke finished with a tournament-high 13 birdies over his three rounds, while Corder tallied 11 and Root added 10. Haney had a pair of eagles on Monday, two of the 15 total eagles, 10 of which came on Tuesday.

Wright State will stay down south, heading up I-95 to Georgia for the Sea Palms Invitational later this week. The Raiders will play two rounds on Friday before a final 18 holes on Saturday at the par 71, 6,664-yard Sea Palms Resort in St. Simons Island, Georgia.
