Women’s Basketball falls to Oakland in tournament play

ROCHESTER, Mich. — The No. 10 seed Wright State women's basketball team had its season end in the opening round of the Horizon League Championship, as the Raiders fell to No. 7 seed Oakland 54-45 on Tuesday evening inside the Athletics Center O'rena.

Three of the Raiders' seven available players scored in double figures, led by Jada Roberson with a team-leading 14 points. KK White added 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while Jada Wright was just shy of a double-double with 11 points, nine rebounds, three steals, and three blocks. Channing Chappell dished out a team-high three assists.

WSU (4-23, 3-18 HL) was held below 50 points for just the third time this season, shooting 35-percent (19-of-54) from the field and 12% (2-of-17) on 3-point attempts. The Raiders committed an uncharacteristic 16 turnovers, including 10 in the first half.

Oakland (14-14, 11-9 HL) struggled offensively by shooting 36% (23-of-64) overall and 15% (3-of-20) from deep. However, the Golden Grizzlies compiled 18 offensive rebounds, winning the battle on the boards, 48-33.

The Raider defense forced OU to 15 turnovers, including eight by way of steal. Diamond Stokes contributed with two steals in 13 minutes of action.

Oakland jumped out to an early 14-9 lead, but Roberson and Wright answered back with consecutive makes to tie the game at 14-all with 1:07 remaining in the first quarter. OU's Aaliyah McQueen closed the period with a 3-pointer to provide the Golden Grizzlies a 17-14 edge.

Both teams were scoreless for the first five minutes of the second quarter, as Oakland broke the stretch with a layup at the 4:15 minute mark. While the Golden Grizzlies stretched their advantage to 21-14, WSU kept the game in reach, entering halftime down 26-21.

Wright had an all-around first half with seven points, six rebounds, and three blocks. Roberson totaled six points in the period on 2-of-9 shooting.

OU pushed its lead to 40-29 in the third quarter, but the Raiders closed the period on a 6-0 run. White opened the fourth quarter with a driving lineup to put the game within one possession, 40-37. However, Oakland answered back with a 10-4 run to push its lead to 50-41 with 2:16 to go in the game.

The Raiders could not overcome the late deficit en route to their first Horizon League tournament loss in nearly two years. White was a bright spot in the second half with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
