The Raiders had several opportunities to plate runs but stranded 12 runners on base, including two or more in the second, third, fifth, sixth, and eighth innings. Wright State loaded the bases with one out in the third inning but proceeded to hit into a double play.
Starting pitcher
Sam Wirsing (1-1) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs on five hits and two walks in 3.2 innings of work. He opened the fourth inning with consecutive outs but was replaced after giving up back-to-back hits.
Tristan Haught was tagged for three runs on two hits and two walks in two-thirds of a frame.
Alex Theis was a bright spot out of the bullpen, holding OSU scoreless on just one hit and no walks while striking out five in 2.1 innings.
Garret Simpson also had a strong outing, allowing no runs in 1.1 innings of relief.
Ohio State reached the scoreboard first, turning two doubles into two runs in the second inning. The Buckeyes added to their lead with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. A three-run sixth inning increased OSU's edge to 7-0.
WSU answered back in the seventh inning with four runs. Greenwell opened the inning with a walk and came around to score on a wild pitch. McConnell recorded a fielder's choice RBI groundout with the bases loaded, while Luikart punctuated the scoring burst with a two-run double.
After Theis struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh, Sass closed the Raider deficit to 7-5 with an RBI single in the top of the eighth. Once again, Theis retired the OSU side in order in the eighth, but the WSU failed to push any runs across in its final chance, sealing a 7-5 loss.
Wright State will return to action with a three-game series at Northern Kentucky, starting on Friday, March 25.
