FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Wright State baseball program earned a 5-3 series-opening victory over Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday afternoon at Mastodon Field.
WSU (10-13, 5-2 HL) will continue its three-game set against the Mastodons (4-20, 2-5 HL) tomorrow at 2 p.m. The conference matchup will take place at nearby Indiana Tech.
Starting pitcher
Jake Shirk (2-4) had one of his best performances of the season, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk in 6.2 innings. The Fort Wayne native struck out a career-high seven batters and retired the side in order in four of his first five frames.
Chris Gallagher blanked the 'Dons in 1.1 innings of work in relief, while
Jay Luikart collected his third save of the year by tossing a scoreless ninth inning.
Offensively,
Zane Harris reached base a team-leading four times on three walks and a two-run single. Luikart recorded his sixth consecutive multi-hit performance, as he batted for 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Julian Greenwell walked twice and added a solo home run, while
Justin McConnell had an RBI single in WSU's three-run fifth inning.
Sammy Sass and
Gehrig Anglin contributed with a walk and a steal in the ballgame. In total, the Raiders tallied nine walks and three stolen bases. Defensively, Wright State was errorless for the eighth time this season.
The Horizon League contest was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, as the Mastodons loaded the bases with no outs and proceeded to reach the scoreboard with a sac fly to deep right.
Trailing 1-0, WSU turned five hits into three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Harris put the Raiders in front with a two-run single, and McConnell followed with an RBI single.
PFW tied the game at 3-all in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a two-run single off the bat of Cade Fitzpatrick.
The tie did not last for long, as Anglin walked, stole second, and came around to score on a double by Luikart in the top of the seventh. In the next frame, Greenwell blasted a solo homer, his third of the year, to increase the Raiders' edge to 5-3.
The 'Dons threatened in the bottom of the ninth with runners on first and second with one out. However, Luikart induced a strikeout and pop-up to seal the victory.
