DAYTON – The Wright State men's golf team found itself in familiar territory following 36 holes on Sunday at the Wright State Invitational at Heatherwoode Golf Club, as the Raiders lead on the team leaderboard with four individuals inside the top 10 as well.
Monday's final round has been canceled due to overnight rain and snow that has continued into the morning hours. The tournament is official based off scores following Sunday's completed second rounds.
As a team, the Raiders lead by one shot after the opening round on Sunday, carding a six-over 290 to sit one shot ahead of Valparaiso, before Wright State tallied a one-over second round 285 to sit at seven-over for the tournament as a group. The Raiders enter the final round 29 strokes clear of second-place Valparaiso and 29 shots ahead of the next closest Horizon League competition, IUPUI.
On the individual leaderboard,
Davis Root leads the field at even par, following rounds of 72 and 70, buoyed by a run of four straight birdies on the back nine of his second round as he finished his day with eight birdies overall. Root moved three spots up the leaderboard to take the solo lead into tomorrow's final round after sitting in a tie for fourth after his opening 18 holes.
Mikkel Mathiesen was tied for the lead after a one-under opening round before a three-over second 18 holes, as he sits in second place at two-over overall after carding rounds of 70 and 74. Mathiesen ran off four straight birdies of his own from holes six through nine as part of his five-birdie opening round. He was playing one-under golf in round two before a bogey and triple bogey on holes 17 and 18 slowed him down, although he birdied the par four first hole (his last hole of the round) to end the opening day on a high note and grab solo second place.
Andrew Flynn made the biggest jump of the field, moving up 34 spots following his second round 69, the lowest of the day, to sit at five-over and in a tie for eighth heading into Monday. After an opening round 78, Flynn responded with five birdies over his second 18 holes, including four on the back nine, to jump to the upper levels of the leaderboard.
Bryce Haney jumped eight spots of his own to sit in a tie for tenth going into the final round at six-over following his rounds of 76 and 72 on Sunday. Haney was up-and-down over the opening 18 holes on the way to his five-over 76 before his second round 72 that saw 13 pars as he navigated around the course.
Cole Corder turned in an opening round 73 and sat tied for seventh through 18 holes before a second round 78 levels him at nine-over for the tournament and in a tie for 20th entering the final round, while
Tyler Goecke is tied for 29th at 12-over after carding rounds of 75 and 79 on Sunday. Playing as individuals,
Brock Rumpke is 13-over in a tie for 34th after rounds of 77 and 78, while
