The grouping of Tyler Goecke, Mikkel Mathiesen, Bryce Haney, Cole Corder and Davis Root will tee off for Wright State.
Â
The Raiders already have experience this season at the El Campeon course at the Mission Inn Resort & Club. Earlier this spring on the same course, with a tournament field that featured seven other Horizon League foes, Wright State ran away from the field at the Orlando Invitational, finishing at five-under par and 22 strokes ahead of the nearest team to grab the title as Goecke captured individual honors.
Â
The Raiders have tallied eight team tournament wins in 11 total events spanning the fall and spring schedule, a new program record, thanks to their victory earlier this week at the Wright State Invitational. Root took home top individual honors last Sunday in the shortened tournament at Heatherwoode Country Club, making him the fifth different Raider to capture an individual title this season before he also grabbed the final Horizon League Golfer of the Week honor. Goecke leads the team with three individual wins this spring (four overall), while his play also earned him HL Golfer of the Week honors on four occasions.
Â
Wright State has won six Horizon League championships in program history, most recently in 2019 when they advanced to the NCAA Regional in Pullman, Washington. After COVID shutdown the 2020 spring season and the HL tournament, the Raiders are coming off a second-place finish last spring to Oakland.
Â
The Raiders also previously won the Horizon League Championship in 1996, 1997, 2000, 2003 and 2004 before breaking the 15-year drought with the 2019 title.
Â
Goecke will lead the Raider charge in Florida after finishing the regular season with a scoring average of 70.58, which is currently ahead of the Wright State single season scoring record by 1.15 strokes over former Raider Ryan Wenzler (2016-17). In addition to his four individual titles, Goecke has also finished inside the top five on five other occasions. Mathiesen finished the regular season with a scoring average of 71.82, the third-best in Raider history, while he won the Valpo Fall Invitational and had four other top 10 finishes. Additionally, Mathiesen qualified for and played in the Qatar Masters tournament on the European Tour Event earlier this spring.
Â
Haney won the UD Invitational back in the fall and has six additional top 10 finishes this season, while his current scoring average of 72.13 is the eighth-best in program history. Corder finished the regular season with a scoring average of 72.48, 11th all-time in program history, while winning the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational in the fall and notching three other top 10 finishes. Root's regular season scoring average of 73.23 is 16th all-time, while he added three additional top 10 finishes to go along with his Wright State Invitational title last week.
Â
The El Campeon Course at the Mission Hills Resort & Club will play as a par 72, 6,765 yard course this week for the Horizon League Championship.
