Raiders belt six homers in comeback win at UIC

CHICAGO — The Wright State baseball program belted a season-high six home runs, including three by Avery Fisher, en route to an 11-10 comeback win over UIC in 10 innings on Sunday at Curtis Granderson Stadium.

WSU (18-19, 11-4 HL) led 9-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but UIC (14-18, 7-5 HL) pushed across two runs apiece over the subsequent two frames, resulting in a 10-9 deficit for the Raiders.

With two outs in the top of the ninth, Fisher belted his third home run, a game-tying solo blast over the right-field wall. The Flames opened the bottom of the ninth with consecutive walks, but relief pitcher Jay Luikart (3-1) retired three batters in a row to force extra innings.

Alec Sayre provided WSU with an 11-10 edge in the top of the 10th inning with a solo roundtrip. Luikart then sealed the victory by tossing another scoreless inning.

Fisher batted 3-for-4 with three homers and five runs batted in on the day. Sayre went 3-for-6 at the plate with a home run and three RBI, while Julian Greenwell drove in two runs on a double and a homer to lead off the Horizon League contest. Sammy Sass also impressed offensively by going 2-for-5 with a solo home run and three runs scored. Gehrig Anglin reached base three times on two hits and a walk.

Sebastian Gongora had a short-lived start on the mound, allowing five runs on eight hits in two innings. Alex Theis gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits and one walk while striking out seven batters in 4.1 innings of relief. Logan Tabeling was tagged for two runs on three hits and two walks in 1.1 innings.

Luikart collected the winning decision, as he held UIC scoreless on no hits and two walks in the final two innings of play. He punched out three batters in the process.

Tanner Shears (1-3) was charged for the loss after allowing two homers over the last three innings. Cole Conn paced the Flames at the plate with a game-high five hits to go along with four RBI and three runs.

Wright State will return to action with a three-game against Youngstown State, beginning on Friday, April 29, at Nischwitz Stadium.
