DAYTON — A three-hit shutout by
Sebastian Gongora powered the Wright State baseball program to a series-clinching 10-0 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium.
The Raiders improved to 20-19 on the season and 13-4 in Horizon League play, while YSU dropped to 15-28 and 8-10 against conference opponents. The teams will conclude the three-game set tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Julian Greenwell finished a double shy of the cycle, as he batted 3-for-4 with a double, a homer, and three runs batted in.
Sammy Sass went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI, while
Zane Harris had two singles, a walk, and an RBI.
Alec Sayre blasted a solo home run for his lone hit of the game.
Gehrig Anglin and
Andrew Patrick each contributed with a sac fly RBI.
Gongora (3-1) recorded his first collegiate shutout on the mound, limiting the Penguins to no runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three batters. The left-hander had a no-hitter after five innings but gave up an infield single to open the sixth.
YSU had a chance to reach the scoreboard in the ninth inning after tallying consecutive two-out singles. However, Gongora induced a groundout to seal the shutout.
Defensively, the Raiders were errorless for the 14th time this season.
In the second inning, Wright State got the scoring started with four runs on three hits and an error. Sass doubled home Harris and later scored on a throwing miscue by the Penguins. Greenwell had an RBI triple in the frame, while Patrick plated
Justin McConnell on a sac fly.
WSU extended its lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to back-to-back homers by Greenwell and Sayre. Anglin led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double and reached home on a groundout by Harris.
The Raiders pushed their edge to 10-0 in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of insurance runs. Anglin drove in a run on a sac fly while Sass drilled an RBI single up the middle.
YSU's Travis Perry (2-2) took the loss after allowing eight runs, five earned, in five innings of work. Padraig O'Shaughnessy was the only Penguin to reach base multiple times as he drew a pair of walks.
