Baseball completes sweep of YSU with 10-3 win

DAYTON — The Wright State baseball program completed a three-game sweep over Youngstown State with a 10-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium.

WSU improved to 21-19 on the season and 14-4 in Horizon League play, while YSU dropped to 15-29 and 8-11 against conference opponents.

Andrew Patrick led the Raiders at the plate with a career-high two homers and three runs batted in. Jay Luikart batted 2-for-5 with a triple, a home run, and three RBI, while Gehrig Anglin drove in two runs on a single. Alec Sayre reached base three times on a pair of singles and a walk.

Wright State drew eight walks en route to its sixth-straight victory. Avery Fisher and Justin McConnell each walked twice to lead the charge. In the fifth inning, Zane Harris added a stolen base, his first since the 2019 season.

Starting pitcher Alex Theis improved to 4-0 on the season after allowing just one run on three hits and two walks while striking out a career-high 10 batters in six innings. The redshirt freshman was tagged for a run in the opening frame but blanked the Penguins in the next five innings.

Aaron Ernst gave up a two-run homer in relief but punched out five batters over two innings of work. Logan Tabeling tossed a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts to seal the sweep.

YSU struck first in the series finale as Steven D'Eusanio plated Braeden O'Shaughnessy on an RBI triple in the opening frame.

Harris and Luikart delivered RBI hits in the bottom of the first to put WSU in front 2-1. The Raiders added to their advantage in the bottom of the second, thanks to a two-run homer by Patrick.

WSU continued to hold the momentum, extending its lead to 8-1 with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Patrick led off the frame with a solo home run, while Luikart went deep with a two-run roundtrip. The Raiders then walked four consecutive times, leading to the fourth run of the scoring spurt.

Julian Greenwell and Sayre opened the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back singles. Both came around to score on a single by Anglin, pushing the Raider edge to 10-1.

D'Eusanio closed the Penguin deficit to 10-3 with a two-run homer in the top of the eighth. However, YSU was held scoreless for the remainder of the game.
