
Root inside Top 15 to pace Raiders after opening round of NCAA Regional

COLUMBUS – The Wright State golf team carded a 13-over 297 team score in the opening round of the 2022 NCAA Columbus Regional on Monday, as Davis Root is the top Raider on the individual leaderboard at one-over in a tie for 14th after the first 18 holes.

Playing the Scarlet Course at the OSU Golf Club, a layout that features a thick rough and tough greens, the Raiders find themselves bunched in the middle of the pack on the team leaderboard, where 12 of the 13 participating schools are all over par as a team through the first round.

Tuesday's second round will see Wright State begin off the back nine for the second straight round. Bryce Haney will be the first off the tee for the Raiders at 8:55 a.m. Monday, followed by Cole Corder (9:06 a.m.), Mikkel Mathiesen (9:17 a.m.), Tyler Goecke (9:28 a.m.) and Root (9:39 a.m.).

Root carded a one-over 72 after a pair of bogeys – one on both the front and back nine – and a lone birdie, which came on the 435-yard par four first hole, his 10th of the round. Goecke sits one shot back of Root at two-over, as his round of 73 featured four bogeys and a trio of birdies. After making his turn Monday, Goecke bogeyed holes one and two but immediately responded with back-to-back birdies on holes three and four, the later coming on the longest hole on the course this week – a 575-yard par five.

Cole Corder and Mikkel Mathiesen are both tied for 56th after carding five-over rounds of 76, as each recorded just one birdie on their scorecards over the course of the afternoon. Bryce Haney is two shots back of them at seven-over (t69) following his first round 78. Haney scattered five bogies throughout his scorecard but ended the round with a double-bogey on his final hole of the day.

Oklahoma State, the second-ranked team in the country, was the only team in the Regional to post a team score under par Monday, entering the second round at four-under with a seven shot lead over second place East Tennessee State. Arkansas' Julian Perico is the individual leader after 18 holes at three-under, followed by three players at two-under and a trio at one-under. Six players are all knotted in a tie for eighth at even par, followed by the tied for 14th group clustered at one-over par that includes Root.
