Raiders win at Milwaukee in extras, clinch Horizon League regular season title

FRANKLIN, Wisc. — The Wright State baseball program earned a 7-6 comeback victory in 10 innings over Milwaukee in its regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Field. The win clinched a Horizon League regular season title for the Raiders.

WSU (27-25, 20-9 HL) has now captured the Horizon League regular season title for the fourth consecutive season (2018, 2019, 2021, 2022) and the fifth time in the last six years overall. The 2022 Horizon League Baseball Championship will be held at Nischwitz Stadium from May 25-28, with the League's top six seeds in a double-elimination bracket.

After eight innings, the Raiders trailed 5-3 but rallied back with four runs over the subsequent two frames. Avery Fisher drilled the game-winning two-run single in the top of the 10th inning.

Justin Riemer paced the WSU offense as he reached base five times on a double and four walks. Fisher batted 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Sammy Sass was 2-for-5 at the plate with a triple and two runs. Jay Luikart batted 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs, while Alec Sayre and Gehrig Anglin drove in one run apiece.

Wright State's pitching staff limited Milwaukee (20-30, 9-18 HL) to just six hits but walked a season-high 16 batters. Despite the command struggles, the Raiders held MKE to one run in the last three innings of play.

Starting pitcher Alex Theis was tagged for two runs, one earned, on one hit, five walks, and two hit by pitch in 2.1 innings before being replaced in the bottom of the third inning. Garret Simpson and Chris Gallagher allowed a run apiece in 1.2 innings, while Donnie Nicodemus and Aaron Ernst tossed scoreless frames in relief.

Jay Luikart (4-1) received the winning decision, as he blanked MKE in the ninth inning. Josh Laisure collected his first collegiate save after holding the Panthers to no earned runs on three strikeouts in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Riemer led off the game with a double and came around to score on an RBI triple by Sayre. Anglin brought Sayre home on an RBI single, extending WSU's lead to 2-0 in the first inning.

Milwaukee evened the score in the bottom half of the first with two runs on one hit and three free passes. MKE captured its first lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Zach Nogalski hit an RBI infield single with the bases loaded.

In the top of the sixth, Sass took advantage of a throwing error and three wild pitches to tie the game at 3-all. However, Milwaukee loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning and took advantage of the opportunity with two runs on a passed ball and a walk.

Wright State pushed across two runs in the top of the ninth to knot the game at 5-all. Luikart and Fisher singled in the frame while Andrew Patrick reached base on a walk. Riemer then drew a bases-loaded walk to score Luikart from third. Justin Greenwell followed with a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Fisher for the game-tying run.

Milwaukee found itself in another bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the ninth, but Luikart forced extra innings by inducing a foul out.

In the top of the 10th inning, Sass and Luikart reached base on a triple and an intentional walk. Fisher then plated both Raiders on a two-run single up the middle, giving WSU a 7-5 advantage.

Milwaukee minimized its deficit to 7-6 on a passed ball in the bottom of the frame, but Laisure induced a fly out to conclude the back-and-forth ballgame.
