Late goal downs Men's Soccer in Florida

JACKSONVILLE, FL – The Wright State men's soccer team was forced to wait through a weather delay for the second straight contest down in Florida, except this time host Jacksonville found the back of the net late following the delay to hand the Raiders a 1-0 defeat.

Wright State (0-1-1) and Jacksonville (1-0-1) were playing on a wet and muddy pitch as rain came down throughout the match and were scoreless heading into the lighting delay in the 66th minute. Out of the break, neither side was able to gain an upper hand until Olivier Correa's goal in the 80th minute that proved to be the only tally of the afternoon.

The Raiders finished with just nine total shots, and only two on frame, in the match, while the host Dolphins had nine shot attempts on goal as part of their 19 total attempts in the win. Wright State keeper Sebastian Jimenez turned away eight Jacksonville shots, evenly split between the two halves, while Dolphin keeper Eduardo Thome saw both Raider attempts on frame come in the second half.

Early on 13 minutes in, Joe Kouadio missed high on his shot attempt, the only tangible Raider pressure until Reece Allbaugh had a pair of shot attempts blocked over a span of 30 seconds just about 10 minutes before the intermission. Out of the break, Nico Lukulia recorded a pair of shots, in the 61st and 64th minutes, that were both turned away by Thome. Lukulia's first attempt was punched away high before his second shot was sent to the lower left corner before being turned away by Thome.

Correa's goal came as part of a flurry of offense by the hosts, with a first Correa attempt blocked by the Raiders, resulting in a corner kick that set up the score. In all, Jacksonville pressure resulted in six shots over the final 20-plus minutes following the weather delay.

Wright State now returns home to Ohio, as two more in-state road contests await as part of the season-opening four-game road trip. The Raiders trek to take on Akron Friday night at 7 p.m. before a meeting with Ohio State September 5, with the home and Horizon League opener against IUPUI on September 10 in the distance.
