Raiders unveil 2022-23 non-conference schedule

DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball program released its 2022-23 non-conference schedule on Tuesday, a slate featuring two NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 teams from a year ago and a multi-team exempt event (MTE).

WSU will prep for the 2022-23 slate with a home exhibition against Ohio Dominican (October 29) and tip off the regular season on November 7 with a road matchup at Toledo. A week later, on November 14, the Raiders will travel to another Mid-American Conference opponent in Bowling Green.

Wright State hosts Ohio Christian on November 17 for its first of two home contests in non-conference play, followed by a short trip to Columbus to take on Ohio State on November 23. The Raiders and Buckeyes last met during the 2012-13 season. Ohio State enjoyed a successful 2021-22 season, going 25-7 overall and earning wins over Missouri State and LSU in the NCAA Tournament.

After OSU, the Raiders will stay on the road for three more road games against Eastern Illinois (November 28), Marshall (December 10), and Tennessee (December 11). The Volunteers advanced to the NCAA Tournament a season ago, knocking off Buffalo and Belmont before losing to Louisville in the Sweet 16. The matchup in Knoxville will mark the first-ever meeting between Wright State and Tennessee.

WSU welcomes inaugural Division I member Southern Indiana to the Nutter Center on December 17 for its last home game in 2022. The Raiders will wrap up their non-conference slate at the Hawk Classic, hosted by Saint Joseph's in Philadelphia. WSU will open the multi-exempt event against St. Joseph's on December 20, followed by Eastern Michigan or James Madison on December 21.

Ohio Dominican - Exhibition (Oct. 29, Nutter Center) The Panthers, a Division II program in nearby Columbus, went 5-23 overall and 5-17 in conference action last year. Head coach Kari Hoffman recorded a 6-2 record against ODU during her time at the helm of Cedarville.

Toledo (Nov. 7, Toledo, OH) Toledo compiled a 29-6 overall record last year with a near-perfect 19-1 mark in the Mid-American Conference, tying a program record for most wins in a season. After enduring an upset to Ball State in the MAC Tournament, the Rockets earned Women's National Invitation Tournament (NIT) wins over Houston Baptist, Kent State, and Marquette before falling to Middle Tennessee in the quarterfinals. Wright State trails in the series, 3-8 all-time.

Bowling Green (Nov. 14, Bowling Green, OH) BGSU is coming off a 17-16 record last year, with an even 10-10 record against MAC opponents. The Falcons finished in third place in the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) with wins against Furman and Nevada and a loss to Saint Mary's. The November meeting will be the first since 2001 between Wright State and Bowling Green. The Raiders are 3-4 all-time against the Falcons.

Ohio Christian (Nov. 17, Nutter Center) The non-conference matchup will mark the first-ever meeting for the two programs. Ohio Christian, an NAIA program out of Circleville, compiled an 11-12 overall record last year. The Trailblazers faced fellow Horizon League school Cleveland State a season ago, falling 104-51.

Ohio State (Nov. 23, Columbus, OH) The Buckeyes earned the No. 6 seed at the 2022 NCAA Tournament by going 25-7 overall and 14-4 in the Big Ten Conference. Ohio State defeated Missouri State and LSU before falling to Texas in overtime in the Sweet 16. OSU is under the direction of 10th-year head coach Kevin McGuff, who has compiled a record of 193–91 (.680). The Raiders and Buckeyes have met four career times, most recently in 2012.

Eastern Illinois (Nov. 28, Charleston, IL) EIU went 16-14 overall a year ago, with an 11-7 mark against Ohio Valley Conference opponents. The Panthers had their season end to Tennessee State in the opening round of the OVC Tournament. Wright State holds a 6-4 advantage in the all-time series, which includes an 81-46 win over EIU during the 2017-18 season. Notably, the Raiders set a single-game school record in 3-point field goal percentage (.833) against the Panthers in their 1993 matchup.

Marshall (Dec. 10, Huntington, WV) The December meeting will be the first between Wright State and Marshall since 2006. Marshall finished 15-13 overall and 10-8 in Conference USA action last year. The Herd dropped a postseason game to Rice in the opening round of the C-USA Tournament, which ended their season. WSU is 3-6 all-time against the Herd.

Tennessee (Dec. 11, Knoxville, TN) The meeting in Knoxville will mark the first-ever meeting between Wright State and Tennessee. The Volunteers compiled a 25-9 overall record a year ago, advancing to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. USI enjoyed a successful 2021-22 campaign in its final year of competition in Division II, earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Screaming Eagles went 23-6 overall, which included a 16-2 conference record. The programs have not met since 1986, which ended in an 82-81 win for Wright State. The all-time series is tied 2-2.

St. Joseph's (Dec. 20, Philadelphia, PA)
The Hawks tallied a 13-17 overall record and a 7-8 mark in conference play last year. SJU made a run in the Atlantic 10 Tournament with victories against Duquesne and Rhode Island but fell to Massachusetts in the semifinals. The meeting against the Philadelphia-based program will be the first in school history for the Raiders.

James Madison or Eastern Michigan (Dec. 21, Philadelphia, PA) Both JMU and EMU had losing records a season ago, failing to advance to postseason play. The Dukes finished 14-15 overall, while the Eagles went 7-20. Wright State faced James Madison for the first-ever time during the 2013-14 season, earning a 79-77 victory in Florida.
