DAYTON — Wright State baseball alum Peyton Burdick (2016-19) has been called up to the Miami Marlins, the organization announced on Friday, August 5.Â
Burdick becomes the second Raider on an active Major League Baseball roster, joining Gold Glove catcher Sean Murphy of the Oakland Athletics. The big-league promotion marks the third time two Wright State alums have played in the MLB simultaneously.Â
Burdick, a native of Batavia, Ohio, slashed .349/.465/.585 with 51 doubles, seven triples, 28 home runs, 168 RBI, and 183 runs scored in 178 career games with the Raiders. The three-time All-Horizon League outfielder was named a Second Team All-American and HL Player of the Year in 2019 after batting .407 with 18 doubles, 15 homers, 72 RBI, 79 runs, 60 walks, and 24 stolen bases in 59 games, leading WSU to a conference regular-season title.Â
Burdick was selected in the third round of the 2019 MLB Draft with the 82nd overall pick by the Miami Marlins. He slugged 23 homers in 2021 en route to earning Minor League Player of the Year honors for the organization. In 2022, the outfielder totaled 33 extra-base hits, 51 RBI, and eight stolen bases with the Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp before being promoted to the big leagues.
Dating back to 1976, Wright State has produced over 70 professional players, including five that have reached the MLB. Alec Sayre was the latest Raider to join the club, as the Minnesota Twins selected him in the 17th round of the 2022 MLB Draft.Â
Burdick is expected to make his MLB debut for Miami today against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. First pitch is set for 2:20 p.m. ET.Â
