Three double-doubles pace Raiders to four-set win

ROCHESTER, MI – The Wright State volleyball team completed a weekend sweep on Saturday afternoon to begin Horizon League play, taking care of Oakland in four sets to open League action 2-0.

The Raiders now return home to McLin Gymnasium next weekend for a pair of matches against Milwaukee and Green Bay as they look to continue what is now a five-game winning streak.

On Saturday, Wright State (10-3, 2-0 HL) dropped a tight opening set 26-24 before rolling off three straight set victories over Oakland (5-10, 1-2 HL) by scores of 26-24, 25-22 and 25-15.

Callie Martin and Sam Ott led the Raiders as both tallied double-doubles, with Martin recording a match-high 15 kills and adding 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the year and Ott notching 12 kills and 13 digs for her fifth double-double to date. Ott added four of the Raiders six service aces as well.

Taylor Bransfield (12) and Megan Alders (11) also had double figure kills, while the pair and Jakyla Jackson all had four blocks. Lainey Stephenson passed out 49 of Wright State's 54 assists and finished with a double-double of her own as she added 12 digs, while Jenna Story had a match-high 29 digs.

SET ONE
A tight set throughout, Oakland tallied six of the first nine points as the Raiders had to play from behind to knot the score at 9-all. Neither side could pull ahead by more than two points the rest of the set until Oakland ended the set with three of the final four points, with the final two coming off a pair of Wright State errors.

SET TWO
An 8-1 run early by Oakland set the hosts ahead by a 12-5 mark before the Raiders responded, taking the lead for the first time at 16-15 thanks to six straight points behind kills from Alders and Bransfield. Back-and-forth from there, Oakland reached set point at 24-23 before a service error tied the score and then consecutive attacking errors gave the Raiders the set.

SET THREE
Wright State jumped out early with the first five points, eventually doubling up the hosts with a 12-6 advantage. Oakland continued to chip away, taking the lead at 19-17 behind a 5-0 run before the Raiders scored five of the next six points thanks in part to a pair of kills from Martin and then three of the final four points behind two more Martin kills to take the set.

SET FOUR
Even early, the sides traded points before a 9-2 run gave the Raiders a 19-10 advantage thanks to kills from Bransfield, Martin, Ott and Stephenson. Both sides tallied points back-and-forth from there but Oakland never threatened, as the Raiders closed the night with three of the final four points behind a pair of Oakland errors and a final kill from Bransfield.
