Saturday victory completes Raider weekend sweep in Michigan

KALAMAZOO, MI – The Wright State volleyball team wrapped up a perfect, 3-0 weekend with a four-set Saturday victory over Indiana State to complete the weekend at the Western Michigan Invitational.

The Raiders (5-0) dropped the opening set, 25-22, before rolling off three straight set wins – 25-16, 25-20 and 25-18 to close the afternoon against Indiana State (0-5).

Wright State saw Sam Ott finish with a match-high 19 kills, while Callie Martin turned in her second double-double effort of the season with 18 kills and 16 digs, adding four service aces. Katie Meyer, making her first start of the year, also had a double-double, passing out 52 of the Raiders' 62 assists and collecting 12 digs as she added five kills.

Megan Alders finished with 15 kills, while Jenna Story had a match-high 22 digs and Jenny Morey added 18 digs as four Raiders had double-digit digs.

The trio of Ott, Story and Stephenson were recognized on the Western Michigan Invitational All-Tournament Team later Saturday afternoon, with Ott named tournament MVP after finishing with 49 kills (4.45 kills/set), including a career-high 24 against Western Michigan, while Stephenson passed out 85 assists, a 12.14 assist per set average, while playing in the two Friday matches and Story averaged 6.27 digs per set (69 total) while adding 15 assists and five service aces to her weekend stat line.

SET ONE
Indiana State jumped ahead early as the Raiders played catch up and tied the score several times throughout the set, eventually leading 20-19 on a Martin kill. Indiana State then tallied the next four points to regain control, as an ISU error and an Ott kill pulled Wright State to two points late before a final kill gave the Sycamores the early lead.

SET TWO
An early 6-0 run by Indiana State gave them a 10-7 advantage, but Wright State used a six-point run of its own to take an 18-15 lead thanks to kills from Bransfield, Martin and Ott. An ISU kill momentarily broke the Raider momentum, but they responded with three kills from Ott as part of a 7-0 run to win the set as Wright State tallied 11 of the final 12 points in the frame.

SET THREE
Back-and-forth early, neither side was able to gain firm control until the Raiders tallied five straight points for a 16-11 advantage. Four straight points from Indiana State pulled the set back to a one-point margin, where it stayed until Wright State ended the set on a 5-1 run thanks to two service aces and a pair of kills.

SET FOUR
A set of runs by both sides, the Raiders used an 8-3 spurt to take a 12-8 advantage behind three kills from Ott and a pair from Alders. Wright State later had a stretch of six of seven points behind multiple kills from both Bransfield and Ott to push to a 20-13 lead. A final kill from Alders pushed the set to match point, where an Indiana State attacking error ended the afternoon.
