Helinski nets second-half goal in win over UDM

DAYTONKaylin Helinski's second-half goal helped the Wright State's women's soccer program to a 1-0 victory over Detroit Mercy on Thursday night at Alumni Field. 

WSU (6-5-3, 4-2-1 HL) collected three points to climb to second place in the Horizon League standings with three matches to go in the regular season. Detroit Mercy dropped to 5-7-3 overall and 3-4 against conference opponents. 

Helinski netted the match's lone goal on a deep strike to the top right corner in the 47th minute. Olivia Mace was credited with her team-leading fourth assist of the year on the score. 

The goal by Helinski turned out to be Wright State's lone shot in the second half, as the Raiders were held to six shots overall and three on frame. Helinski tallied a team-leading three shots, while Amber Branum and Addy Canter added shots on goal. 

Wright State goalkeeper Kiera Sarka finished with eight saves en route to her fifth shutout performance of the 2023 campaign. Seven of eight saves transpired in the second half, including five in the last 30 minutes of action.

Detroit Mercy ended the match with 14 total shots, punctuated by an 11-1 shot advantage in the closing 45 minutes. The Titans also bested WSU 8-0 in corner kicks. Abbey Lodato paced the attack with a trio of shots while seven other players added shots on goal. 

The Raiders go back on the road for a Horizon League matchup at Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday, October 15.
