DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball team tallied its third straight Horizon League sweep on Tuesday night as the Raiders downed visiting Youngstown State in three sets.
Wright State (12-9, 8-2 Horizon) now gets set for a Saturday afternoon showdown at Northern Kentucky in a matchup that will start a stretch where three of the Raiders' next four matches are on the road. Wright State's lone home contest in the stretch will be next Tuesday night when the Raiders welcome Robert Morris to McLin Gymnasium.
On Tuesday, Wright State and Youngstown State (7-14, 2-8 Horizon) battled through a back-and-forth first set that the Raiders took 27-25 before the hosts grabbed 25-16 and 25-22 set wins to complete the sweep. The Raiders finished the night with 53 kills and a .242 hitting percentage while Youngstown State hit .177 but ended the match with just 33 kills.
Aaliyah Byers led all players with a match-best 13 kills while
Sam Ott added 12 kills and
Reilly Zegunis finished with 10 kills of her own.
Katie Meyer passed out 44 of the Raiders' 47 assists while
Jenny Wessling had a match-high 20 digs and
Callie Martin was also in double figures with 11 digs. Wright State tallied eight service aces in the win, including three from
Andrea Bortulin and a pair from Meyer.
SET ONE
Back-and-forth in the early going, Wright State used a four-point run to gain separation before three straight points later pushed the margin to 16-9. Back-to-back kills from Meyer and Alders pushed the Raiders to set point at 24-19 before Youngstown State rolled off the next five points to pull back into the set and later tie at 25-all moments later. From there, the Raiders used kills form Alders and Byers to end the set.
SET TWO
A 7-0 run early in the set behind kills from Byers, Ott and Martin gave Wright State a comfortable margin the Raiders held throughout the set. Wright State closed the set with seven of the final eight points thanks to kills from the same trio of Byers, Ott and Martin before Bortulin served up back-to-back aces to end the set at 25-16.
SET THREE
Five if the first six points went to the Raiders behind kills from Byers, Ott and Martin before Youngstown State used an 8-1 run in the middle of the set to pull even at 14-14. Wright State recorded six of eight points late thanks to three straight kills from Byers to push to 23-19, only to see the visitors tally three straight points and pull within one. The Raiders closed the night and the match with back-to-back kills from Alders and Zegunis.
