Women’s Soccer battles NKU to scoreless draw in regular season finale

Wright State has clinched the No. 5 seed for the upcoming Horizon League Championship, where they will play at No. 4 seed Robert Morris on Sunday, October 29, at 1 p.m.

DAYTON — The Wright State women's soccer program battled Northern Kentucky to a scoreless draw in its regular-season finale on Wednesday night at Alumni Field. 

The Raiders end the 2023 regular season with a 6-6-5 overall record and a 4-3-3 mark against conference opponents. Wright State has clinched the No. 5 seed for the upcoming Horizon League Championship, where they will play at No. 4 seed Robert Morris on Sunday, October 29, at 1 p.m. The winner between WSU and RMU will face a semifinal matchup against top-seed Milwaukee or No. 2 seed IUPUI on Thursday, November 2. 

Wright State finished tonight with edges in total shots (16-11), shots on goal (4-3), and corner kicks (4-3). After being limited to five shots in the opening half, WSU's attack came alive with 11 strikes and three corners in the second period. The Raiders made a late push with four shots in the last five minutes, which included off-target shots by Mariella Hartmann and Kaylin Helinski in the closing 10 seconds of play. 

Helinski, a fifth-year senior, tallied a match-high five shots in her last-ever collegiate match at Alumni Field. Ainsley Terada and Macey Moore added shots on goal in the second half. 

Goalkeeper Kiera Sarka blanked the visiting Norse (7-3-7, 4-2-4 HL) with three saves en route to her sixth shutout of the year. She collected two saves in the second half, highlighted by a stop in the 87th minute. 

As a team, Wright State held NKU to just three shots on goal, tied for the team's lowest mark this season. Zara Graff helped anchor the Raider back line with a team-leading 90 minutes of playing time. 

Erykah Cornett led Northern Kentucky's attack with three shots. NKU goalkeeper Mickayla Kowalski kept the Raiders off the scoreboard with four saves.
