DAYTON – The Wright State men's basketball team had a chance for a game-winning basket on Tuesday night but
Trey Calvin's contested pullup jumper at the horn hit front rim and the Raiders fell 78-77 to Toledo in the home opener inside the Nutter Center.
Wright State (0-2) now faces a short turnaround, with a visit to Indiana ahead on Thursday night on the road.
On Tuesday, four Raiders finished in double figures, led by Calvin's game-high 22 points, while shooting 55 percent from the floor on the night. The sides were even in nearly every category except for turnovers, with Wright State turning the ball over 15 times to give Toledo (3-0) a 25-9 edge in points off turnovers.
Wright State jumped out of the gate and led 14-7 five minutes into the action behind six points from
Brandon Noel in an early stretch that included nine-straight points behind 4-of-6 shooting in the two-plus minute run. Back-and-forth the remainder of half, Toledo took a one-point 41-40 lead into the break.
Toledo tallied six of the first eight points of the second half before the Raiders responded and the sides traded the lead throughout the second 20 minutes, finishing the night with 19 lead changes and 13 tied scores.
Tanner Holden's putback layup with 8:06 to play tied the game at 64-all in what proved to be the final tied score of the night, with the Raiders pushing to a 67-64 advantage moments later. Toledo responded with an 11-4 run over the next two and a half minutes to lead 75-71 with 5:11 remaining. Neither side was able to make a shot over the next two minutes before
Alex Huibregtse's jumper pulled the Raiders within a basket before the sides again traded buckets.
After Toledo's Ra'Heim Moss made one of two free throws with 1:36 to play, Calvin connected on a jumper with 82 seconds remaining to bring the scored to 78-77. Wright State turned in back-to-back defensive stops in the final minute, including a big block by
Brandon Noel on the first of Toledo's two final minute possessions, but the Raiders came up short in their final two offensive possessions down the stretch.
Behind Calvin,
AJ Braun turned in 16 points, including 12 in the first half, as he finished the night with an 8-of-10 shooting line while adding seven rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocks. Holden finished with 15 points of his own with four assists, three rebounds and two steals, while Noel was the final Raider in double digits with his 10-point, eight rebound effort.
Wright State finished the night shooting 55 percent overall (32-of-58) from the floor while connecting on just four of 16 three-point attempts (25 percent). The Raiders were 9-of-11 (82 percent) from the free throw line, all in the second half. Toledo connected at 49 percent (32-of-65) overall and was 5-of-16 (31 percent) from three-point range with a 9-of-14 mark from the free throw line.
