DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball program extended its winning streak to four games with an 89-78 victory over Marshall on Monday night inside the Nutter Center.
The Raiders (4-2) had a season-high five players score in double digits, led by
Layne Ferrell's 17 points to go along with seven rebounds and two blocks.
Alexis Hutchison recorded her first double-double of the season, tallying 15 points, 10 assists, and two steals.
Rachel Loobie (13 points),
Lauren Scott (12 points), and
Jada Tate (10 points) also reached double-figure scoring in the winning effort.
Wright State had its top shooting performance of the year, finishing 52.2 percent (36-of-69) from the field, 45% (9-of-20) on 3-pointers, and 72.7% (8-of-11) at the free throw line. WSU dished out a season-high 20 assists on its 36 makes while only turning the ball over 13 times against Marshall's relentless full-court press.
The Raiders led for over 38 minutes of the non-conference matchup while also besting the Thundering Herd (2-3) in points in the paint (52-46), points off turnovers (18-15), and blocks (4-0).
Marshall entered Monday night averaging 86 points per game on 45.4% shooting. However, Wright State's defense held the Herd to 40% (30-of-75) on field goals and a 21.7% (5-of-23) mark on 3-pointers.
WSU jumped out to a 22-7 lead in the opening quarter and carried a 47-33 edge into halftime. Scott had most of her offensive production in the first half, scoring 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting and a team-high 19 plus/minus with her on the floor. Marshall finished 31.4% (11-of-35) from the field in the period, which included two makes from beyond the arc.
Both teams scored 27 points in the third quarter to keep the Raiders' lead in double digits (74-60) with 10 minutes to go. The Herd used a 6-0 run to cut their deficit to 82-74 with 4:13 left in the fourth quarter. However, WSU held Marshall to just four points for the remainder of the game to seal the home win.
Loobie came alive with 11 points and six rebounds in the second half, while Hutchison added eight points and five assists.
Wright State stays home for its Horizon League opener against IUPUI on Thursday, November 30. The game will start at 7 p.m. and stream on ESPN+.
