Women’s Basketball opens conference play against IUPUI at home

DAYTON — The Wright State women's basketball program hosts IUPUI for its Horizon League opener on Thursday night inside the Nutter Center. The non-conference matchup will tip off at 7 p.m. and stream on ESPN+. Live stats will also be available.

LAST TIME OUT
The Raiders extended their winning streak to four games with an 89-78 victory over Marshall on Monday night. Wright State had a season-high five players score in double digits, led by Layne Ferrell's 17 points to go along with seven rebounds and two blocks. Alexis Hutchison recorded her first double-double of the season, tallying 15 points, 10 assists, and two steals.
WSU had its top shooting performance of the year, finishing 52.2 percent (36-of-69) from the field, 45% (9-of-20) on 3-pointers, and 72.7% (8-of-11) at the free throw line. The Raiders led for over 38 minutes of the non-conference matchup while also besting the Thundering Herd in points in the paint (52-46), points off turnovers (18-15), and blocks (4-0).
HEATING UP
With a 4-2 record, Wright State is off to its best six-game start since the 2017-18 campaign. The Raiders have started the season 5-2 or better only once in the last seven years.

The Raiders have won four consecutive games for the first time under the direction of third-year head coach Kari Hoffman. WSU has defeated Mount Vernon Nazarene (88-64), Indiana State (72-63), Slippery Rock (82-45), and Marshall (89-78) in its current streak of victories. The Raiders have gone 7-3 over their last 10 games dating back to the 2022-23 season.

Wright State leads the all-time series 13-8. The Raiders have lost four in a row to IUPUI, most recently in February 2023. Kacee Baumhower averaged a team-high 14.5 points over two games versus the Jaguars last season. Three seasons ago, Wright State clinched an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament by defeating IUPUI 53-41 in the Horizon League Championship title game.

Junior guard Katie Davidson has been IUPUI's top playmaker, as she ranks third in the conference in scoring (16.2 ppg), free throw makes (26), and free throw attempts (33). Graduate forward Tahlia Walton is averaging 14.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while graduate guard Jaela Johnson is knocking down a team-leading 2.0 threes per contest.

Graduate transfer Alexis Hutchison tops the team in scoring (16.0 ppg), and assists (3.7 apg) through six games. Her 19 points at Southern Indiana (11/6) were the most in a Raider debut since Angel Baker's 21 points against CSU Bakersfield (11/6/18) at the start of the 2018-19 season. Hutchison recorded a season-high 10 assists in WSU's win over Marshall (11/27), the most by a Raider since Angel Baker's 11 against Detroit Mercy (1/23/20) during the 2019-20 season.
Redshirt senior guard Layne Ferrell is averaging 11.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.8 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game. At Indiana State, she stuffed the stat sheet with 18 points, 14 rebounds, four steals, and three blocks. Her double-double was the first by a Raider since the 2021-22 campaign.
