LAST TIME OUT
Alexis Hutchison turned in a career-best 37 points and the Wright State women's basketball team gave West Virginia all it could handle Monday morning, but the Raiders came up just short 77-72 on the road. The Raiders trailed by one at the break before leading most of the second half against West Virginia. Wright State used a Layne Ferrell three-pointer for the first points of the second half and moments later got a jumper from Hutchison to gain control, leading by as many as five three times in the third quarter. The Raiders took a two-point lead into the fourth quarter and again led by as many as five coming down the stretch before West Virginia finally made its move.
HOLIDAY HOOPS
Wright State is playing MTE action just before the holiday break for the second straight season after playing a pair of games in Philadelphia last December. Wright State lost both contests, falling 70-62 to tournament host Saint Joseph's and slipping to Eastern Michigan 66-54. Current Raider Cara VanKempen turned in 11- and nine-point games, while Makiya Miller had eight- and seven-point efforts.
LAS VEGAS RAIDERS
This marks the second consecutive year that Wright State has played basketball in Las Vegas after the Raider men played in MTE action out west last November, going 2-1 in tournament action.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
Wright State will face off with both Wyoming and Presbyterian for the first time in program history this week.
- Wyoming is currently 4-5 overall, with three of its wins at home. The Cowgirls have lost three straight heading into Vegas action.
- Presbyterian is 8-4 on the season, currently 5-1 at home and 3-3 on the road. The Blue Hose head to Vegas following a loss to South Carolina but had won six straight before that setback.
CAREER-HIGH HUTCH
Alexis Hutchison turned in a career-best 37 points on December 18 at West Virginia. Hutchison finished 11-for-17 from the floor, hitting six of her 11 three-point attempts, while she was also 9-of-10 from the free throw line on the way to her 37 points, bettering her previous career-high of 33 points scored in November 2022 against Indianapolis when she played at Malone. It was her ninth game this season with 15-plus points and fourth game with more than 20 points scored after she had 21 points at the halftime break.
FINDING HER LAYNE
Layne Ferrell has scored in double figures in two straight games and five of her last six contests overall dating back to November 27. Ferrell has tallied double digits scoring in seven total games this season, recording a season-best 18 points twice (at Indiana State, vs. IUPUI).
FROM WAY DOWNTOWN
