Raiders drop conference game at Purdue Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — The Wright State women's basketball program snapped its five-game winning streak with a 71-60 loss at Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday afternoon inside the Gates Sports Center.

The Raiders (5-3, 1-1 HL) had three players score in double figures, led by Alexis Hutchison's game-leading 18 points and nine rebounds. Kacee Baumhower tallied 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals, while Layne Ferrell added 12 points and two blocks.

Wright State outrebounded Purdue Fort Wayne (6-2, 2-0 HL) 40-38 while also scoring 36 points in the paint. Rachel Loobie was close to a double-double with eight points and eight rebounds. Jada Tate pulled down eight rebounds in just 13 minutes off the bench.

The Raider offense shot below 40 percent for the first time in their last six games, finishing 39.3% (24-of-61) from the field and 20% (5-of-25) on 3-point attempts. WSU also turned the ball over 19 times, which led to a 20-7 advantage in points off turnovers for the Mastodons.

Wright State was at its best in the first quarter, outscoring PFW 24-18. The Raiders shot 56.3% from the field in the opening period, which included a 4-of-8 mark on 3-pointers. Hutchison paced the hot start with 10 points, while Baumhower added seven points and three assists.

The Raiders were outscored 24-13 in the second quarter, which resulted in a 42-37 deficit entering halftime. After an impressive start, WSU's offense shot 0-for-6 from beyond the arc and 1-for-3 at the charity stripe in the second quarter. The 'Dons also turned 11 turnovers by Wright State into 14 points in the first half.

WSU continued to struggle offensively coming out of the break, as PFW limited the Raiders to 11 points on 5-of-15 shooting in the third quarter. The Raiders trailed by as many as 13 points, 57-44, in the quarter, but Baumhower and Ferrell ended the period with consecutive layups to reduce their deficit to 57-48.

Wright State kept the Horizon League contest close, as Hutchison's layup cut its deficit to one possession, 62-59, at the 5:26 minute mark of the fourth quarter. However, PFW answered back with an 8-0 run to push its lead to 70-59 with 33 seconds left. The double-digit deficit was too much for WSU to overcome, sealing its first conference loss of the season.

The Raiders return to non-conference play for a home meeting versus Eastern Illinois on Saturday, December 9. The game will tipoff at 4 p.m. and stream on ESPN+.
