Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ferrell shines, leads Raiders to overtime road win at RMU

MOON TOWNSHIP, PA – Layne Ferrell scored 20 of her 25 points after halftime as the Wright State women's basketball team defeated Robert Morris 80-77 in overtime on Sunday afternoon as the Raiders connected on a season-high 14 three-pointers.

Wright State (9-6, 3-1 Horizon) has now won three straight contests, including a pair on the road in Horizon League action this weekend, and now returns home for three of its next four games, beginning Friday night against Milwaukee inside the Nutter Center.

On Sunday, Wright State trailed by four at the halftime break and by seven going into the fourth quarter, but the Raiders chipped away at the Robert Morris (6-7, 2-2 Horizon) advantage over the final 10 minutes to put themselves in a position to eventually tie the game and win in the extra period.

An eight-point RMU lead with six minutes to play, Wright State rolled off seven of the next eight points to pull within two with four minutes remaining to set up the finish. The Raiders were again down two when Ferrell connected on an old fashioned three-point play with 38 seconds remaining, tying the game with her layup and giving Wright State a one-point lead moments later with her free throw. After RMU took the lead with a jump shot basket of its own, the hosts fouled Alexis Hutchison with 22 seconds remaining, with Hutchison connecting on the first free throw to tie the game before missing the second. RMU never got a shot off in the final 20 seconds as the Raider defense forced a steal as the clock expired and sent the game to overtime.

Robert Morris led by five with two minutes to play in overtime before Ferrell again answered, connecting on a pair of free throws and a layup over a 50-second stretch to pull the Raiders within one with 46 seconds remaining. Wright State then forced a RMU turnover on the defensive end and Hutchison gave the Raiders the lead for good with 14 seconds remaining. Kacee Baumhower connected on a pair of free throws with two seconds remaining to wrap the afternoon up.

Ferrell's 25 points were her most as a Raider, matching a 25-point performance she had in March 2021 against Ohio while at Akron, and was her fifth game with double digit points in the last six contests. Hutchison finished with 14 points and a season-best 10 rebounds for her first double-double as a Raider, while Makiya Miller used three three-pointers on the way to a season-best 12 points of her own. Kacee Baumhower was the final Wright State player in double figures with 11 points.

Wright State finished shooting just 36 percent (26-of-72) but saw 14 of its 26 made baskets go for three, as the Raiders connected on six more triples than Robert Morris (WSU 14-of-38, 37 percent). The 14 made threes are the fourth-most triples made under head coach Kari Hoffman, while the Raiders hit a program record 18 threes last January against Cleveland State.
Simone Morris' 17 points led three RMU players in double figures, while Danielle Vuletich had a double double with 11 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.
