HONOLULU — The Wright State baseball program dropped its series finale to Hawaii 16-7 on Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium.
The Raiders (1-3) finished with eight hits and eight walks in the loss.
Dane Thomas led the way, batting 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a run scored.
Boston Smith connected on a two-run double, while
Ben Stoner had an RBI single, two walks, and two runs.
Luke Arnold and
Avery Fisher added RBI hits.
Wright State's pitching staff gave up 14 hits — three for extra bases — while also allowing 11 free passes on six walks and five hit batters.
Starting pitcher
Alex Theis (0-1) took the loss after allowing seven runs in 1.1 innings of work.
Garret Simpson and
Calvin Mitchell were tagged for three runs apiece in relief.
Warren Hartzell tossed a team-high two innings out of the pen in his collegiate debut, allowing one run on one hit and a walk.
The Raiders fell into an early 10-0 hole, as Hawaii scored twice in the opening frame and eight times on six hits, two hit batters, and an error in the second inning. WSU's deficit grew to 13-0 after three more runs by the Rainbow Warrior offense in the bottom of the fourth.
Wright State reached the scoreboard in the top of the fifth, as Fisher and Stoner recorded back-to-back RBI singles. Hawaii lengthened its lead to 15-2 with a run apiece in the bottom of the fifth and sixth frames.
The Raiders scored four runs on three hits and three walks in the top of the eighth frame to reduce their deficit to 15-6. Anglin started the scoring spurt with an RBI groundout, followed by a two-run double from Smith and an RBI single from Arnold.
Thomas added an RBI double in the top of the sixth for WSU's seventh and last run of the game.
The Raiders will continue their season-opening road slate from February 24-26 at Kentucky.
