Pitching shines in Saturday sweep of Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. — Standout outings from starting pitchers Sebastian Gongora and Jake Shirk lifted the Wright State baseball program to a Saturday sweep over Oakland by scores of 11-1 and 2-0. 

The duo limited the Golden Grizzlies to a combined four hits while striking out 23 batters and walking just one. Shirk headlined the sweep with a one-hit shutout, striking out a career-high 14 batters while only allowing an infield hit in the first inning and no walks.

WSU's defense helped out the pitching staff with a pair of errorless performances

Wright State improved to 25-17 overall and 15-5 in the Horizon League, while Oakland fell to 18-25 on the season and 10-10 against conference opponents.

Game 1 - Wright State 11, Oakland 1
The Raiders scored in six different innings en route to an 11-1 win over Oakland in the series opener on Saturday. 

WSU showed pop at the plate with nine of their 11 hits going for extra bases. Gehrig Anglin batted 2-for-3 with a double, a homer, three runs batted, and two runs scored. Sammy Sass went 2-for-4 with a homer and two runs, while Luke Arnold had a double, a triple, an RBI, and two runs. Patrick Fultz and Jay Luikart homered for their lone hits of the game. Andrew Patrick and Julian Greenwell contributed with an RBI double apiece.

Gongora improved to 6-1 on the year after limiting the Golden Grizzlies to just one run on three hits and one walk while striking out nine batters in eight innings. Oakland only reached scoring position once and scored its lone run off Gongora on a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ty Roder struck out two batters in a scoreless ninth inning of work. 
 
Game 2 - Wright State 2, Oakland 0
In game two, Wright State took down the Golden Grizzlies 2-0 to seal the Saturday doubleheader sweep. 

Shirk (4-4) gave up an infield single with two outs in the bottom of the first inning but retired the following 25 batters faced en route to his first collegiate nine-inning shutout. He recorded 13 strikeouts in the stretch while walking none. The Fort Wayne, Indiana native had multiple punchouts in five different innings and fanned the side in the sixth frame on his way to a career-high 14 overall.

The Raider offense finished with three hits and four walks in the victory. Arnold scored Boston Smith from first on an RBI double in the top of the third. Anglin belted a two-out solo homer in the top of the fourth. 

Anglin reached base three times on his roundtrip and two walks. Sass added a single and a stolen base while Smith walked twice in addition to his run scored.
