Raiders snap win streak at Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The Wright State baseball program snapped its 10-game win streak with an 8-7 loss to Youngstown State on Friday at Eastwood Field.

The Raiders dropped to 35-19 overall and 22-7 in the Horizon League, while Youngstown State improved to 18-35 on the season and 12-16 in conference play. The teams will conclude the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.

YSU scored in four of its opening six frames, which led to an 8-2 deficit for the Raiders. In the top of the seventh, Wright State got within three runs, 8-5, as Jay Luikart hit a two-run homer and Patrick Fultz drilled an RBI double. Gehrig Anglin belted a two-run blast with no outs in the top of the ninth to close YSU's edge to 8-7. However, the Penguins retired WSU's next three batters to hold off the Raiders' late rally.

Wright State finished with seven hits and six walks but stranded eight runners on base. Luikart batted 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs batted in, and two runs scored to lead the offense. Anglin totaled two RBI and two runs, while Carson Clark went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a walk. Drew Baker added a sacrifice fly and a walk. Sammy Sass walked a team-high two times.

Starting pitcher Jake Shirk (5-5) was dealt with the loss after allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits and no walks while striking out four batters in four innings of work. Alex Theis gave up three runs on three hits in an inning out of the bullpen. Garret Simpson shined in relief, limiting YSU to one run on four hits and no walks in three innings.

WSU's lone error of the game in the bottom of the second led to two unearned runs scored by Youngstown State.
