DAYTON — The Wright State baseball program defeated crosstown rival Dayton 11-2 on Tuesday night at Nischwitz Stadium.
The Raiders (30-18) plated multiple runs in the opening three innings of play on their way to an early 8-0 lead. WSU limited Dayton (18-31) to just a run apiece in the fourth and ninth innings to seal its fifth consecutive victory.
Wright State featured a balanced offensive attack, as eight of its nine starters recorded a hit.
Gehrig Anglin had a two-run homer and an RBI groundout, while
Boston Smith homered two runs in and added a double.
Andrew Patrick went 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBI, two runs, and a stolen base.
Dane Thomas batted 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base.
Julian Greenwell contributed with an RBI double, a run, and a walk.
Starting pitcher
Garret Simpson (1-0) earned the winning decision after holding UD to just one run on four hits and two walks while punching out four batters in 5.0 innings of work.
Tristan Haught followed with two perfect innings out of the bullpen, tallying three strikeouts in the process.
Chris Gallagher fired a scoreless eighth frame in relief.
WSU committed an outfield error in the top of the first inning but had no mishaps for the remainder of the game. The Flyer defense was plagued with five errors, which led to two unearned runs for the Raiders.
The Raiders got things going with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, as Greenwell doubled in a run and Anglin followed with a two-run homer.
Thomas led off the bottom of the second with a triple and touched home on Patrick's RBI single. Patrick proceeded to swipe second base, reach third on a groundout, and score on a groundout by Anglin.
A two-run roundtrip by Smith and Patrick's second RBI single of the game pushed the Raider lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the third.
The Flyers scored their first run on an RBI groundout in the top of the fourth, but WSU responded with a run off an error in the bottom of the fifth to extend its edge to 9-1.
Wright State's scored twice on a pair of wild pitches in the bottom of the seventh to increase its lead to double-digits, 11-1. The Flyers added a run in the top of the ninth but went down swinging on strikes for the final out of the game to seal Raider win.
