Raiders close road trip with loss to Grand Canyon

PHOENIX — The Wright State women's soccer program concluded its Arizona road trip with a 4-0 loss to Grand Canyon on Sunday night at GCU Stadium.

The Raiders drop to 0-2 on the season and will return to action on Thursday, August 24, versus Southern Indiana for their home opener at Alumni Field.

Wright State finished the non-conference matchup with five shots, including shots on goal by Amber Branum and Sophia Kuerze. Goalkeepers Kiera Sarka and Erin Baker combined for seven saves while allowing two goals apiece.

Newcomer Zara Graff logged a team-leading 82 minutes in the losing effort. A total of 23 Raiders touched the field, including nine first-year players.

The Lopes (1-1) struck first in the Sunday meeting, as Brenna Alderson found the back of the net at the 13-minute mark of the opening half. GCU doubled its lead to two goals on a strike by Bekah Valdez in the 32nd minute.

Sarka stayed busy in goal with three saves in the first 45 minutes of action, while Borchert had WSU's lone shot.

A goal by Gianna Gourley at the 52-minute mark of the second half increased Wright State's deficit to 3-0. GCU's Ani Jensen scored the match's final goal in the 72nd minute.

Baker, who took over as goalkeeper after the break, tallied four saves in her season debut. Branum, Kuerze, Kaylin Helinski, and Allie Freese threatened the GCU defense with a shot apiece in the period.
