DAYTON — Goals by
Marcella Sizer and
Lauren Borchert pushed the Wright State women's soccer program to a 2-1 victory over Southern Indiana in its home opener on Thursday night at Alumni Field.
The Raiders improved to 1-2 with their first win of the 2023 campaign, while USI dropped to 0-2-1 overall.
Wright State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the non-conference matchup and bested the Screaming Eagles in total shots (13-12) and saves (7-3). Borchert had a team-leading five shots, including three on goal, while
Olivia Mace tallied assists on both of WSU's scores. Sizer and
Kaylin Helinski added two shots apiece in the winning effort.
Goalkeeper
Kiera Sarka earned a clean sheet while tallying three saves in the first half.
Erin Baker replaced Sarka coming out of the halftime break and finished with a team-high four saves compared to one goal allowed.
Sizer, the reigning Horizon League Offensive Player of the Year, got the scoring started at Alumni Field, as she found the back of the net off a feed from Mace in the 19th minute. Borchert scored off Mace's second assist of the match at the 54-minute mark, pushing the Raider lead to 2-0.
Southern Indiana quickly responded with a goal in the 58th minute, cutting Wright State's edge to 2-1. USI's attack threatened with five shots, including four on goal, over the remaining 32 minutes of the second half. However, Baker and company denied the equalizer to seal Wright State's home-opening victory.
The Raiders will return to competition with a road meeting at Central Michigan on Sunday, August 27. The non-conference contest will start at 1 p.m. and air on Chippewas All-Access.
