Four tally double-digit kills in Raider win over Ball State

DAYTON – The Wright State volleyball team wrapped up the first day of action at the Dayton Invitational with a four-set victory over Ball State on Friday night as four Raiders recorded double-digit kills.

Wright State (3-5) won the first two sets Friday night and then fell in a marathon 31-29 third set before wrapping up the night in four sets. The Raiders are back in action Saturday afternoon when they take on tournament host Dayton. The match is set for a 1 p.m. start and is expected to be streamed on ESPN+.

Against Ball State (2-5), Callie Martin, Katie Meyer and Sam Ott each recorded double-doubles, with Martin tallying a match-best 16 kills to go along with 11 digs and Meyer dishing out a game-high 40 assists along with 10 digs. Ott added 10 kills and 15 digs of her own as part of her final stat line. Megan Alders and Reilly Zegunis also notched double-digit kills with 13 and 12, respectively. Jenny Wessling collected a match-best 28 digs and added four service aces, while the Raiders finished the win with nine service aces as a group.

OF NOTE…
- Alders recorded 27 combined kills in Friday's two matches, moving her career total to 1,001 kills.
- Martin collected 27 total digs in Friday's two matches, moving her past the 1,000 career dig mark.
- Wessling finished the two matches with 51 combined digs to reach 1,000 digs in her collegiate career (High Point & Wright State).

SET ONE
Back-and-forth throughout the set, neither side was able to gain any breathing room as the score never stretched more than two points. The Raiders used a three-point run thanks to a kill from Ott and a pair of Ball State errors to take a 18-16 lead before Ball State responded with three straight points of its own and the sides traded points from there. Ball State tallied two straight points to have a 24-22 advantage and set point, but Wright State used a service error to knot the score and followed that with an Andrea Bortulin service ace and an Aaliyah Byers kill to take the opening set.

SET TWO
Wright State scored six of the first nine points to take the early lead, only to see Ball State respond with a 6-1 run to pull even. The Raiders found separation with a trio of four-points as part of a larger 12-2 run aided by eight Ball State errors that pushed the lead to 23-13. After a Ball State kill, Wright State closed the set behind a kill from Alders and a final Ball State attacking error.

SET THREE
A set full of runs, as both sides had their share of three-point swings. Down five at 20-15, Raiders rolled off an 8-1 run behind kills from Byers and Martin to take a two-point lead. Ball State responded with the next two points to knot the score at 23-all and the sides fought off set points from there up to 29-all before Ball State tallied back-to-back points to end the set.

SET FOUR
The Raiders jumped out to an 8-3 advantage behind kills from Martin and service aces from Ott and Wessling before Ball State chipped away with a 5-1 run to pull back into the set. Wright State rolled off six of eight points in the middle of the set thanks to kills from Alders, Byers, Martin and Zegunis to gain breathing room before ending the night with three of the final four points, capped by a final Martin kill.
