INDIANAPOLIS – Three players finished with double-digit scoring nights on Thursday as the Wright State women's basketball team got back into the win column with a 74-64 road victory at IUPUI.
Wright State (11-7, 5-2 Horizon) is now off until next Wednesday, January 17 when the Raiders will host Cleveland State at the Nutter Center. The Raiders have now won five of their last six contests dating back to late December.
On Thursday, the Raiders used a 24-point third quarter to gain just enough separation over IUPUI (3-12, 1-5 Horizon). Wright State outscored the hosts by seven points in the third quarter to build on a three-point halftime lead in an otherwise evenly matched contest.
Tied at 38-all halfway through the third quarter, the Raiders ended the period scoring 16 of the final 22 points to create some separation before tacking on the first six points of the fourth quarter. In total, the stretch ended up as a 22-6 scoring run for Wright State as the Raiders shot 58 percent from the floor and added six points at the free throw line over the five and a half minute scoring run. IUPUI eventually closed the night on a 15-4 run to pull the margin to 10 points but Wright State's momentum was too much to overcome.
Wright State finished the night shooting just 37.5 percent overall from the floor, tied for its sixth-lowest percentage this season, but made up the difference with 10 three-pointers, the eighth time this year that the Raiders have recorded double-digit triples in 18 contests.
Alexis Hutchison scored 11 of her game-high 16 points in the second half as she added six rebounds, five assists and three steals to her final stat line, while
Kacee Baumhower finished with 15 points of her own while passing out five assists.
Lauren Scott notched 12 points, her fifth double figure scoring night of the season but first in over a month.
Layne Ferrell filled her stat line with eight pints, seven rebounds, six blocks, three assists and three steals while
Rachel Loobie added three blocks of her own to go with a game-high 12 rebounds as she chipped in seven points.
Wright State tallied a 27-of-72 final shooting line for the 37.5 percent overall shooting mark, while the Raiders were 10-of-13 (77 percent) from the free throw stripe, including a 9-of-12 mark at the line in the third quarter alone. IUPUI ended the contest shooting 39.4 percent (26-of-66) and had five three-pointers (5-14, 36 percent) while going to the line just 10 total times (7-10, 70 percent).
Tahlia Walton and Abby Wolterman each finished with 14 points to lead IUPUI in the loss, while Jaela Johnson was also in double figures scoring with 13 points.
