Raiders overcome slow start, win by double digits Wednesday night

DAYTON – The Wright State women's basketball team erased an early first quarter deficit on the way to an 80-68 victory over Oakland on Wednesday night as four Raiders finished with double digit scoring nights.

Wright State (13-10, 7-5 Horizon) trailed by 14 points after the opening 10 minutes before the Raiders nearly made up the entire deficit in the first three-plus minutes of the second quarter as they rolled off the first 12 points of the quarter on the way to a 21-5 scoring run, taking the lead on an Alexis Hutchison free throw during the run.

After Wright State held a one-point lead over Oakland (9-11, 5-7 Horizon) at the half, the Raiders opened the third quarter on a 14-3 run and never looked back.

Hutchison finished with a game-high 21 points as part of a double-double with 10 rebounds, while she filled her stat line with six assists and four steals against just one turnover. Kacee Baumhower tallied 18 points of her own with six rebounds and a pair of assists, while Cara VanKempen chipped in 10 points. Jada Tate made her first start as a Raider and turned in 10 points of her own, her second double-digit scoring effort of the season.

The Raiders shot just 29 percent over the first 10 minutes as part of the slow start before rebounding with shooting quarters of 73, 53 and 63 percent the rest of the night on the way to a 52 percent overall shooting mark (26-of-50). Wright State hit three of its six three-pointers in the second quarter (6-10, 60%) and was 22-of-27 (82 percent) from the free throw stripe.

Oakland shot 58 percent in the first quarter but didn't record a quarter shooting mark above 47 percent the rest of the night, finishing at 40 percent overall (26-of-65) with an 8-of-22 mark (36 percent) from three-point range and the visitors were 73 percent (8-of-11) at the free throw stripe.

Kennedie Montue, Brooke Quarles-Daniels and Linda Van Schaik each had 13 points for Oakland in the loss as the three combined for just over 50 percent of the visitors' scoring.
