DAYTON – The Wright State women's basketball jumped out to a 13-point lead after a quarter of play on Friday night and had a trio of double-digit scorers on the way to a 77-70 home victory over visiting Milwaukee in Horizon League action.
Wright State (10-6, 4-1 Horizon) now gets set for a Sunday matchup against Green Bay, who is 4-0 in the Horizon and has won six straight after a Friday win at NKU. Fans can keep up with Sunday's action by watching on ESPN+ or following live stats.
On Friday, the Raiders shot 71 percent in the opening quarter while hitting 4-of-5 three-pointers to lead 28-15 after 10 minutes and eventually led 46-33 at the half. Wright State took a 15-point lead into the fourth quarter and was able to withstand a late push from Milwaukee (7-9, 1-4 Horizon) to hold onto the home win.
Alexis Hutchison led the way with a game-high 24 points, pouring in 16 points in the second half thanks in part to a trio of three-pointers as she finished the night shooting 50 percent (8-of-16) with five total three-pointers, filling her stat line with four assists, three rebounds and three steals.
Rachel Loobie,
Kacee Baumhower and
Layne Ferrell each did the majority of their damage in the first half on the way to double digit scoring nights of their own, with Loobie adding seven rebounds and five assists. Loobie scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half, while Baumhower recorded all but three of her 13 points early and Ferrell notched all 11 of her points across the opening two quarters.
After the hot start, the Raiders cooled off but finished the night at 47 percent overall (29-of-62) while connecting on 12-of-25 three-point attempts (48 percent), including eight in the first half. Milwaukee connected at a 39 percent overall clip (26-of-67) but was just 5-of-19 from deep (26 percent).
Loobie got the scoring started with a bucket on the opening possession of the game and the Raiders never trailed, as the game featured only three tied scores – all coming inside the first three minutes off action as both sides started 3-of-5 from the floor. Wright State broke the early 6-6 tie with a Ferrell three-pointer that kickstarted a 15-4 Raider run to set the tone for the night as the hosts eventually led for all but 1:45 of action.
Jorey Buwalda finished wit h15 points in the loss to lead four Milwaukee players in double digits scoring.
