DETROIT – The Wright State women's soccer team fell to Detroit Mercy 4-3 on Thursday afternoon. The Raiders are now 1-3-1 in the Horizon League and will continue conference play on Sunday at 1 p.m. as they take on the Oakland Golden Grizzlies. The Raiders (3-8-1, 1-3-1 HL) ended the night with nine shots to the Titan's (6-6-2, 4-0-2 HL) 12, but bested Detroit Mercy in shots on goal with six to their four. UDM had nine corner kicks to Wright State's two.
Leading the way for WSU was
Ruby Dunlevy; logging only 34 minutes of play, Dunlevy sunk two goals for the Raiders, first in the 40th minute and later in the 73rd, totaling three on the season.
Caitlin Burger added her third goal of the season as she ended the night with three shots, two on target, landing the first goal of the match.
Samara Nunn put up two shots on the evening, while
Olivia Stroud and
Alyssa Thomas each added one shot on goal. The Raiders had no saves on the night.
Wright State had three shots in the first, the first putting the Raiders on the board as Burger contained the ball after a tackle, shooting past Titan defenders, sinking it in the bottom left corner, with Nunn credited for the assist. UDM opened the match with four shots in the first 15 minutes, and followed the Raider goal with three more, but were unable to find the back of the net. Thomas added the second shot for WSU in the 38th minute, putting it in the bottom center, but was stopped by Titans keeper Marisa Silver. Just 30 seconds later,
Olivia Mace intercepted a pass at midfield, launching it just outside of the box to Dunlevy. It was one-on-one as Silver left the net, but was unable to stop Dunlevy, allowing an uncontested goal in the 40th minute and a 2-0 lead for the Raiders at the half.
The Raiders bested UDM 6-4 in shots in the second half, while each team had two corner kicks. The Titans scored their first goal just 56 seconds into the half, adding another 20 seconds later, tying the match at two. Nunn followed with a shot in the 50th minute. The game slowed with no shots until the 73rd minute when Mace corralled her own corner kick, passing from near the bench to inside the box, allowing Dunlevy to score her second goal of the evening as she put it past a Titan defender and goalkeeper.
The Raiders did not hold the advantage for long as UDM tied the match at three in the 77
th minute, but not before Burger recorded another shot in the 75th. Stroud put up a shot in the 82nd, placing it in bottom right for a GK save, and Nunn a shot out left in the 84th. The Titans recorded their lead-taking goal in the 85th minute, 4-3. Burger made an attempt in the 89th, but was unsuccessful as the UDM keeper added her third save of the night.
