DAYTON – The Wright State men's soccer team moves to 2-3-1 in the Horizon League after falling to Oakland 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. The lone Raider goal came from
Brock Pickett in the 49th minute, his first goal of the season.
Wright State (5-7-2, 2-3-1 HL) finished with ten shots, two on goal, to Oakland's (5-6-2, 3-1-2 HL) 12 shots, five on goal. The Raiders bested Oakland in corner kicks 4-2 and saves 3-1.
Uleto Fuentes led the way for Wright State, recording three shots, followed by
Brian Burkett and
Cole Werthmuller with two shots each, one on target by Werthmuller.
Edwin Espinal-Elvir,
Conner Osterholt, and Pickett each had one shot on the day.
Goalkeeper
Joel Shaw logged the full 90 minutes, ending the day with three saves. Joining Shaw in the complete game were Osterholt, Pickett,
Samuel Rudjord, and Werthmuller.
Zakaria Amro logged 87 minutes, not subbing out until the final three minutes, and
Jack Jenkins ended the day with 78 minutes of play.
The Raiders added four shots in the first period, starting with Werthmuller in the sixth minute. Fuentes followed with a shot in the 12th minute, and Espinal-Elvir in the 15th. Fuentes added the final WSU shot of the half fin the 29th minute. Shaw had one save in the first 45 minutes, stopping a Golden Grizzlies shot to the bottom left in the 30th minute. Oakland held a 1-0 advantage at the half, scoring in the 34th minute.
Wright State put up six shots in the second half, getting off to a quick start, tying the game in the 49th minute. The score matching goal came as the Raiders were awarded a free kick just outside the 18 after a Grizzlies yellow card. Burkett took the free kick, placing it in the box for Pickett to sink his first goal of the season. The Raiders persisted, adding shots in the 56th, 57th, and 58th minutes, one each by Burkett, Fuentes, and Werthmuller. Shaw recorded saves in the 51st and 62nd minutes.
Oakland regained the advantage, scoring in the 69th minute. The Raiders held relentless pressure in through final ten minutes, maintaining possession and creating several opportunities in the box, but were unable to find the back of the net. Burkett and Osterholt added the final shots of the day in the 81st and 86th minutes.
Wright State will play again on Tuesday, October 22 at 7 p.m. as they host Bellarmine for their 2024 Pink-Out game. The game will have ESPN+ livestreaming and live stats provided.
