DETROIT – The Wright State men's basketball team used a big scoring stretch early in the second half as the Raiders pulled away from Detroit Mercy 93-78 on Thursday night behind five players in double figures scoring.
Â
Wright State (16-12, 11-6 Horizon) led by two at the halftime break before rolling off 17 straight points as part of a larger 20-3 run over a four-and-a-half-minute stretch to take a 65-49 advantage with 11:56 to play. Detroit Mercy (1-28, 1-17 Horizon) had one final push and cut the margin to single digits with just over nine minutes to play, but the Raiders responded again, with Brandon Noel throwing down a dunk to kickstart a six-point Wright State run that saw Noel tally all six points to push the lead back to double digits for the rest of the night.
Â
Trey Calvin finished with a game-high 25 points to lead the Raiders, finishing 7-of-12 from the floor and 7-of-7 from the free throw line, as he added six assists and four rebounds. Noel finished a rebound shy of his sixth double-double, tallying 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting with nine rebounds and three blocks. Tanner Holden filled his stat line with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block, while Alex Huibregtse had 13 points, four rebounds and four assists. Logan Woods notched a career-high 11 points off the bench, including seven in the first half, with three rebounds and a pair of steals.
Â
Wright State shot 53 percent (32-of-60) from the floor while connecting on 11 three-pointers (11-25, 44 percent), just the third time the Raiders have hit double-digit three-pointers this season and one shy of the season-high mark of 12 hit at Robert Morris in mid-January. The Raiders were 75 percent (18-of-24) from the free throw line in the win, going 11-of-13 in the second half.
Â
Detroit Mercy finished shooting at 52 percent (30-of-58) from the floor but was just 3-of-13 (23 percent) from three-point range. The Hosts were 79 percent (15-of-19) from the free throw line.
Â
The Raiders ended the night with a 34-25 rebounding edge, pulling down 21 defensive rebounds, while Wright State had a 28-4 scoring edge in fast break points and a 18-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
Â
Jayden Stone had 25 points to lead four Detroit Mercy players in double figures, with those four accounting for all but six of the hosts points in the loss.
