NORMAN, OK – The Wright State baseball team fell short in two games to the University of Oklahoma on Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park, dropping 14-9 in game one and 10-3 in game two. The Raiders are now 1-5 on the season, and will finish the series at Oklahoma on Sunday, February 25 at 3:00 p.m. ET.

Wright State recorded 12 runs on 16 hits throughout the two games, with two home runs, four doubles, ten walks, and two hit by pitch. Notably,
Luke Arnold and
Jay Luikart each put up a two-run homer in game one, while Sass recorded two doubles in the second game.
Game 1 – Oklahoma 14, Wright State 9
Making a comeback from their first game of the series, the Raiders put up nine runs on nine hits, four walks, and one hit by pitch, with nine strikeouts in the loss. Wright State came into the game reactive, tying the score at one in the top of the second with a single through the right side by
Boston Smith to send Luikart home. The Sooners had previously scored on a homer in their first at bat.
The Sooners put up a tough offense in the second inning, getting seven runs on five hits. Sooners Easton Carmichael, Carter Frederick, Anthony Mackenzie Michael Snyder, and John Spikerman each recorded a hit to raise the Oklahoma lead, 8-1. The Sooners gave another run in the third, bringing the score 9-1.
The Raiders reacted in the fourth, starting with a single up the middle by Luikart to send Sass home, after he reached first on an error and took second on a wild pitch.
Patrick Fultz was walked, followed by Smith reaching on a fielder's choice. Arnold grounded out to second to send Luikart home.
Dominic Pilolli and
Gus Gregory gave the final plays of the inning, each recording a double to put two more runs on the board, lowering the Sooner lead 9-5.
The Sooners returned recording two doubles of their own in the bottom of the fourth, entering double-digit runs, 11-10. They continued in the fifth with two singles and a sacrifice fly, giving their last three runs of the game, 14-5. Arnold quickly lowered the lead, recording a two-run homer in the sixth after a single by Smith, 14-7.
Chris Gallagher came in to pitch in the sixth, holding the Sooners to a one-two-three inning. The final runs of the game were scored as Sass was walked in the seventh, and sent home on another Raider two-run homer by Luikart, lowering Oklahoma's lead to five, 14-9. The following innings had only one hit by the Sooners in the eighth, but they were unable to find home plate.
Wright State starting pitcher
Ty Roder (0-1), was charged with the loss after allowing eight runs on six hits, with three walks in his 1.1 innings of work. Gallagher made a large impact in the later half of the game, allowing no runs with only one hit and one walk, while striking out three batters in his three innings on the mound.
Leading the Raiders at the plate was Luikart, with three hits in the game. Gregory and Smith followed, each putting up two. Arnold and Pilolli round out the nine Wright State hits, each recording one. Arnold and Luikart led the team with three RBI, each recording a home run.
Jace Miner (1-1) took the win for the Sooners, after coming in in the fourth and preventing Wright State from tallying more runs on the board, leaving two on base. In his two innings of work, Miner struck out three batters, and allowed two runs on two hits. Oklahoma finished with 15 hits and 11 walks on the game.
Game 2 – Oklahoma 10, Wright State 3
The Raiders finished the Saturday doubleheader recording three runs on seven hits with six walks, against their nine strikeouts. Wright State came in strong, loading the bases in the first with singles by Gregory and
Julian Greenwell, and a walk from Fultz. But the Sooner pitching staff was strong, and ended the first with three left on base.
Spikerman, leadoff hitter for the Sooners, entered the second game in similar fashion to the first, as he was walked and stole his way to third, scoring on a throwing error and taking the initial Sooner lead, 1-0. The Sooners added another run to the scoreboard in the second off a double down left center, 2-0.
Sammy Sass recorded his first double of the game in the third, sending Gregory home and closing the gap in the Oklahoma lead, 2-1. Sass attempted to reach home plate himself, stealing third but later being caught stealing home. The Sooners put two more runs on the board in the third, and another in the fourth with a home run by Kendall Pettis, 5-1. Oklahoma continued the runs in the fifth, reaching on two doubles and a single, 8-1.
Zade Fusselman was fast to prevent anymore Sooner runs, making a grab in centerfield to end the fifth with two left on base.
A Luikart Single up the middle in the sixth and another Sass double in the seventh round out the Raider's RBI's. The Sooners put two more runs on the board in the sixth with a two-run home run by Snyder. Though the Sooners were able to add two more hits, there were no more runs scored in the final two innings.
Starting pitcher,
Josh Laisure, was charged with the game's loss, after allowing five runs on seven hits, with one walk in his 3.1 innings of work. Laisure was able to strike out three of Oklahoma's batters. The Raiders finished with seven hits, led by Gregory and Sass who each gave two. Greenwell, Luikart, and Smith each recorded one hit for Wright State.
Malachi Witherspoon, starting pitcher for the Sooners, took the second win of the day after pitching five innings and allowing only two runs on seven hits, with three walks and three strike outs. Leading Oklahoma at bat was Jackson Nicklaus and Pettis, each recording three hits, with Snyder and Pettis each recording a home run in the game.
The series finale will begin on Sunday, February 25 at 3:00 p.m. ET at Oklahoma. The game is expected to stream on ESPN+ and will have live stats provided.
