Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Noel's double-double leads five in double figures in Sunday road win

ROCHESTER, MI – The Wright State men's basketball team tallied 14 of the first 16 points in the second half and never looked back on Sunday afternoon as the Raiders took care of Oakland 96-75 in their final road test of the regular season.

Wright State now returns home to the Nutter Center for the final two regular season contests of the year, beginning with a Wednesday night matchup against Purdue Fort Wayne before a Saturday meeting with Northern Kentucky. Both games will be 7 p.m. starts, and Saturday will be Senior Night with pregame ceremonies before the game.

Down one at the half, Wright State (17-12, 12-6 Horizon) rattled off the first nine points to open the second 20 minutes before settling on the 14-2 run to start the half, with Alex Huibregtse tallying eight points over the two-plus minute stretch on his way to a game-high 21 points to lead five Raiders in double figures scoring.

The Raiders doubled up the hosts over the first six minutes of action and led 18-9 before Oakland (19-11, 14-5 Horizon) chipped away at the margin over the remainder of the opening half. Oakland tallied seven straight points late in the half to take its first lead and, after some back-and-forth scoring possessions, the hosts connected on a three-pointer in the final first half moments to take the one-point lead into the break.

After the hot start to the second half, the Raiders put the exclamation mark on the road win with a 10-2 run with just under eight minutes to play, punctuated with back-to-back dunks. Trey Calvin was on the passing end of both rim benders, first grabbing a defensive board to find Tanner Holden ahead of the defense before moments later Calvin came away with a steal and pushed the ball ahead to Holden, who found Brandon Noel on an alley-op to cement the margin in double digits.

Sparked by the eight early second half points, Huibregtse finished with a game-high 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting with five three-pointers, adding six assists, while AJ Braun turned in 20 points on 10-of-15 shooting with five rebounds and two blocks. Noel recorded his seventh double-double of the season – and sixth in Horizon League play – with a 19-point, 16-rebound effort.

Holden turned in a complete stat line with 15 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals, while Calvin chipped in 11 points and had a full stat line of his own with five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.

Wright State shot 67 percent in the second half and finished the win at 56 percent overall (37-of-66) with 22 assists, the 11th time this season the Raiders have had 20 or more assists in a game. The Raiders hit seven of their nine three-pointers in the second half (9-19 overall, 47 percent) and were 72 percent (13-of-18) from the free throw line. Defensively, the Raiders held Oakland to just 34 percent overall shooting in the second half after the hosts shot 50 percent in the first 20 minutes (27-65, 42 percent overall). Oakland was just 9-of-29 (31 percent) from three-point range and added a 71 percent (12-of-17) from the free throw line.

The Raiders outrebounded the hosts 38-36 with 30 boards on the defensive glass, while Wright State turned 15 Oakland turnovers (10 Raider steals) into 22 points thanks to the giveaways.

DQ Cole had 18 points to lead five Oakland players in double figures scoring in the loss, with that group accounting for all but four points for the hosts.
