RICHMOND, KY – The Wright State baseball team defeated Eastern Kentucky 21-16 on Sunday, sweeping the three-game series. The Raiders are now 7-7 on the season, and will play again at home on Tuesday, March 12 at 3:00 p.m. against Xavier University.
Putting up 21 runs on 23 hits with nine walks, Wright State had six batters with three hits, that being
Drew Baker,
Julian Greenwell,
Gus Gregory,
Parker Harrison,
Sammy Sass, and
Boston Smith.
Jay Luikart and
Ben Vore each gave two hits, with
Carson Clark recording one. The Raiders had three home runs in the Sunday game, coming from Clark, Sass, and Smith. There were five Wright State extra-base hits, consisting of a triple by Smith, two doubles by Baker, and one double each from Greenwell and Vore.
The Raiders opened with five runs in the first, beginning with a two-RBI homer from Sass. Clark was walked with the bases loaded to add another run, followed by a two-RBI single by Harrison. The Wright State pitching staff to a single run in the bottom of the first, ending the inning with two left on base. Both teams added two runs in the second, the Raider's coming from a Sass single and Baker reaching on a fielder's choice for Greenwell to score, ending the second 7-3.
The third inning gave WSU their large advantage, adding ten runs on seven hits. Luikart and Sass both added singles, before a Smith grand slam put the Raiders into double-digit scoring and a ten-run lead, 13-3. Immediately after Smith's four run homer, Clark added one of his own. WSU gained a 13-run lead with a two-RBI single by Gregory, before Greenwell doubled down the left field line for the tenth run in the third, 17-3.
The Colonels lowered the Raider advantage in the fourth, putting up a home run and a two RBI single, 17-6. The game slowed, as there were no runs in the fifth, and a single run in the sixth, coming from a Baker double allowing Luikart to score. EKU added a run of their own, making the score 18-7. Wright State had a lower scoring seventh, with one run coming from Sass reaching on a fielder's choice and Vore reaching home plate, 19-7.
EKU made a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, lowering the Raider advantage to five, with a three-RBI home run, followed by a single, and ending with another three-RBI home run, 19-14. The Raiders retaliated with a Smith triple, sending Baker home, followed by a Harrison single for Smith the score, 21-14. The Colonels were home run-happy, adding a two-run homer in the eighth as the final scoring play of the day, 21-16.
Warren Hartzell (1-0) was awarded the win, after entering in the fourth for two innings of work, allowing only one run on one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.
Josh Laisure opened on the mound for the Raiders, allowing six runs on ten hits with one walk and four strikeouts in his three and two third innings of work. Notably,
Garrett Peters entered in the eighth, finishing the game no runs with one hit, no walks, and three strikeouts.
Isaac Milburn took the loss on the day, after allowing five runs on five hits with two walks in just a third of an inning on the mound. EKU finished with 16 runs on 20 hits with four walks against their 12 strikeouts. They were led by Tait Nunnally, recording six hits in his six at bats. Nunnally put up two home runs and one double, tallying six RBI. Miguel Larreal also added six RBI, putting up three hits, including one home run.
