Wright State clinches fourth seed after win in Detroit

DETROIT, MI – After taking an early lead, the Wright State women's basketball team has solidified their seeding in the Horizon League after defeating the University of Detroit Mercy 66-56 on Saturday. Post-season play will begin for the Raiders on Thursday, as they host No. 5 seed Milwaukee in the #HLWBB Quarterfinal.
 
Taking a ten-point lead in the first quarter, Wright State (17-14, 11-9 Horizon) held great defense against Detroit Mercy (16-15, 9-11 Horizon), allowing only three field goals in the first ten minutes of the game. The Titans closed the gap in the second quarter, shooting 46.7 percent from the floor, putting up 16 points, to the Raiders' nine, lowering Wright State's lead to three at the end of the first half, 28-25.
 
The game stayed closer after the half, with the Titans holding Wright State to a single point lead with under five minutes left in the third, 35-34. A layup and one by Rachel Loobie ended the third 46-39. The Raiders had their highest scoring quarter in the final period, putting up 20 points compared to Detroit Mercy's 17. The Raiders held a large advantage through the fourth, with the largest lead of the game coming with three and a half minutes left, 60-46. Much of the fourth quarter battle happened on the line, as the Raiders made eight of their 20 points with free throws, while the Titans went six-for-nine on the line.
 
Alexis Hutchison led the way for Wright State, putting up 22 points and four steals on the day. Following was Kacee Baumhower with 16 points, four steals, and three assists. Layne Ferrell led the team with nine rebounds, three blocks, and three steals, as she totaled nine points. Rachel Loobie was another standout rebounder, grabbing seven rebounds, six of which were defensive.
 
Wright State shot 35.8 percent overall (19-of-53) shooting 30.4 percent from beyond the arc (7-of-23). Going 7-of-7 on the line in the third, the Raiders finished 21-of-29 for free throws (72.4 percent). Detroit Mercy finished shooting 38.9 percent overall (21-of-54), aided in their shooting in the third and fourth, going 13-of-28 between the two. The Titans shot 36.4 percent from the three-point range (4-of-11), and ended shooting 62.5 percent at the stripe (10-of-16).
 
Irene Murua led the Titans, putting up a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds. Emma Trawally Porta tallied three blocks alongside her 13 points and seven rebounds. Rounding out Detroit Mercy's double-digit figures was Imani McNeal, finishing with ten points.
