Peters career high leads Raiders to victory over Oakland

DAYTON – The Wright State baseball team defeated Oakland 5-4 in game two of the three-game series on Friday afternoon. The Raiders are now 14-12 on the season and 5-3 in the Horizon League. The series finale between Wright State and Oakland will be at 3:00 p.m. with ESPN+ live streaming and live stats provided.

The Raiders finished with five runs on ten hits with two walks and four strikeouts. They were led by Patrick Fultz, Jay Luikart, and Ben Vore adding two hits each, with Drew Baker, Gus Gregory, Sammy Sass, and Boston Smith each recording one hit. The Raiders had six extra-base hits on the day with two doubles from Fultz, one double by Sass, and one home run each from Baker, Smith, and Vore. Dane Thomas and Luikart both reached base on a walk, and Sass on a hit by pitch.
 
The Golden Grizzlies took an initial lead with two runs in the top of the second and one in the third, but the Raiders swiftly tied the game at three in the bottom of the third. A second inning homer by Smith was the first run scored for the Raiders, followed by a two-RBI single by Luikart tying the score at three. The Raiders took the lead with a solo home run to left field by Baker in the fourth, 4-3. An Oakland single in the fifth tied the score at four, with the game staying run-less for the following two innings. A Vore solo homer added the final run of the day, giving Wright State the lead and 5-4 win.
 
Garrett Peters (2-0) was awarded the win after entering in fifth to pitch four and one third innings, allowing only one run on three hits with two walks. Peters finished the day with a career best and current team season-high of eight batters struck out. Chris Gallagher (S, 1) earned the save after entering for the final two third innings, preventing a runner in scoring position from tying the game.
 
Shane McAlinden (1-2) was charged with the loss after allowing one runs on two hits with one walk in four and one third innings on the mound. The Golden Grizzles finished the day with four runs on eight hits with four walks against their 11 strikeouts. They were led by Brandon Heidal with two hits and one run scored. Oakland finished with two extra-base hits, a double by Lucas Day and triple by Aiden Orr.
