Raiders secure series win against Purdue Fort Wayne

DAYTON – The Wright State baseball team defeated Purdue Fort Wayne 11-4 in game two of the series on Saturday afternoon. The Raiders are now 24-18 overall and 13-7 in the Horizon League. The series will continue Sunday, April 28 at 1:00 p.m. with live stats provided.

The Raiders finished with 11 runs on 12 hits with nine walks against their four strikeouts. Patrick Fultz, Julian Greenwell, Jay Luikart, and Sammy Sass each recorded two this on the day, while Luke Arnold, Andrew Patrick, Boston Smith, and Ben Vore each recorded one hit. Making up their five extra-base hits were four doubles, one each by Arnold, Fultz, Greenwell, and Smith, and a home run by Luikart.
 
Wright State opened the day with an eight-to-nothing lead after three innings. The rally began in the first, as a Luikart homered after Greenwell reached on a walk. Smith followed, doubling to center field, and was sent home on a Patrick single. Patrick recorded two stolen bases to reach third. After Arnold reached base on a walk, Fultz recorded a two-RBI double down the left field line. The Raiders added one run in the bottom of the second, coming from Greenwell reaching on a double, advancing on a wild pitch, and scoring on a Luikart ground out. Two runs came in the third, as Patrick and Smith reached on walks, both scoring on a Fultz double.
 
The fourth and fifth innings were scoreless, as PFW added one hit in the fourth and two in the fifth, while Wright State had a single in each inning, one each by Fultz and Sass. The Mastodons added their first run in the top of the sixth, scoring on an RBI-single. The Raiders regained their eight-run advantage in the bottom of the seventh, as Smith scored on an Arnold ground into double play. The 'Dons scored their final runs in the top of the eighth, with an RBI-single and two-RBI double. The final run of the day came as a Vore RBI-single sent Greenwelll to score, ending the day 11-4.
 
Starting pitcher Garret Simpson (4-1) was awarded the win after pitching five innings, allowing only four hits with four walks, while striking out five batters. Griffen Paige pitched the following two innings, allowing only one run on one hit with one walk and four batters struck out. Warren Hartzell closed for Wright State, allowing only one hit and one walk in two innings, striking out three batters.
 
PFW starting pitcher Carter Sabol (4-5) was charged with the loss after allowing eight runs on eight hits with five walks and two batters struck out. The 'Dons finished with four runs on seven hits and nine walks against their 12 strikeouts. They were led by Brooks Sailors with two hits and one RBI, and Nick Sutherlin with one hit and two RBI.
