DAYTON – The Wright State baseball team defeated Youngstown State University 11-1 for the series sweep on Sunday afternoon. The Raiders are now 18-13 overall and 8-4 in the Horizon League.
The Raiders finished with 11 runs on 12 hits with 11 walks against their three strikeouts. They were led by
Julian Greenwell with three hits, followed by
Drew Baker,
Sammy Sass, and
Ben Vore with two hits.
Patrick Fultz,
Jay Luikart, and
Andrew Patrick each added one hit on the day. The Raiders recorded seven extra-base hits, with two doubles by Greenwell and one from Baker, Fultz, and Sass. Clark, Fultz, Luikart, and Sass each reached base on walks twice, with Patrick, Smith, and Vore reaching on a walk once.
The game got off to a slow start, with no runs being scored in the first three innings. Wright State took their lead, adding five runs in the following three innings, beginning with a sacrifice fly by Fultz in the bottom of the fourth, allowing Patrick to score. A Sass double in the fifth sent Greenwell to score, with a Vore single putting Sass across home plate for the three-to-nothing advantage. The Raiders added two more runs in the sixth with an RBI single by Sass and an RBI hit by pitch by Vore. Youngstown added their lone run in the top of the seventh, scoring on a wild pitch before the Raiders added six runs to end the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Wright State's six-run inning began with a double by Greenwell sending Fultz to score. Luikart followed, adding an RBI single for Clark to score. Clark and Sass were sent home with a two-RBI single by Vore. A sacrifice fly by
Andrew Patrick allowed Luikart to score, adding the tenth run of the day. The bases were loaded after Baker advanced on a hit by pitch, with the game ending run coming from Vore scoring on a wild pitch, ending the day 11-1.
Starting pitcher
Chet Lax (3-0) was awarded the win after allowing only one run on two hits with four walks and three batters struck out in six innings on the mound.
Ty Roder ended the day, pitching the seventh inning, allowing no runs or hits with one batter struck out.
Sloan Ulrich (0-6) was charged with the loss after allowing three runs on six hits with four walks and three batters struck out in four and two third innings of work. Youngstown finished with one run on two hits with four walks against their four strikeouts. They were led by Brett Stanley and Trey Pancake, each adding one hit for the Penguins. Pancake notably recorded a double in the top of the third.
