NILES, OH – The Wright State baseball team defeated Youngstown State 4-3 in the series opener on Friday afternoon. The series will continue Saturday, May 11 at 3:00 p.m. Fans can keep up with the action through live stats or by tuning in to the YSU audio broadcast.

The Raiders finished with four runs on seven hits with one walk against their four strikeouts.
Patrick Fultz and
Ben Vore led the team, both recording two hits.
Andrew Patrick,
Sammy Sass, and
Boston Smith followed, each adding one hit for the Raiders. Fultz and Patrick each added a homer on the day, continuing a program record breaking season with now 101 team home runs.
Wright State got off to a slow start, adding only two hits in the first three innings, those being a Vore single in the first and a Sass single in the third. The Penguins held a 1-0 advantage early on, adding a run in the bottom of the first.
A Fultz homer to left field tied the game at one in the fifth. After a quick sixth inning, the Raiders gained a 3-1 advantage after Smith reached on a single to right field, allowing Patrick to record the second Raider homer of the day. YSU reacted with a two-RBI home run of their own, tying the score at three. The game stayed close with a hitless eighth inning, but the Raiders persevered, taking the lead in the top of the ninth. Wright State secured the series opening win as Vore first reached on a single, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Smith, and scoring on a Fultz single up the middle.
Garrett Peters earned his fourth win of the season after pitching one and one third innings, allowing no runs or hits with no walks, striking out two batters.
Cam Allen was awarded the save after closing the game, allowing only one hit with no walks, striking out two batters. Starting pitcher
Jake Shirk put in six and two third innings of work, allowing three runs on six hits with six batters struck out.
Jacob Gehring (4-6) was charged with the loss after pitching all nine innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with one walk and four batters struck out. The Penguins finished with three runs on seven hits with no walks against their ten strikeouts. They were led by RJ Sherwood's seventh inning homer, tallying two RBI.
