Raiders fall to NKU in #HLBASE Championship

DAYTON – The Wright State baseball team fell to the No. 2 seed Northern Kentucky 6-10 on Friday afternoon. They will continue tournament play this evening in an elimination game, taking on the winner of Milwaukee versus Youngstown State at 7:00 p.m.
 
The Raiders finished with six runs on nine hits with three walks against their 11 strikeouts. They were led by Patrick Fultz and Gus Gregory, both recording two hits. Carson Clark, Julian Greenwell, Jay Luikart, Nate Manley, and Sammy Sass each added one hit. Gregory and Luikart both had one double on the day.
 
Wright State got off to a slow start, adding only two hits in the first three innings. Greenwell opened the day, reaching on a single up the middle in the first, followed by Gregory reaching on a single to right field in the third. The Raiders added their first run in the sixth, as Gregory doubled to left field, advancing to third on an error after Greenwell reached on a fielder choice. A Sass single to left center sent Gregory to score. WSU recorded another hit in the seventh with a Fultz single through the left side.
 
Wright State had a late rally, adding five runs in the bottom of the ninth. The rally began as Baker was hit by a pitch, advancing to second on a Patrick ground out and to third on a wild pitch. Baker scored on a Fultz single to right center. A Clark single put Fultz on second, as both advanced on a Gregory walk. Greenwell earned an RBI on a walk. Greenwell and Gregory advanced while Clark scored on a wild pitch. A Manley single sent Gregory across home plate, with the final run of the day coming on a Luikart double down the left field line sending Greenwell to score.
 
Starting pitcher Garret Simpson (4-3) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits with one walk in one and a third innings on the mound. Garrett Peters entered for Simpson, putting in three and two third innings of work, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks, leading the team with four batters struck out.
 
Norse starting pitcher Tanner Gillis (8-2) was awarded the win after pitching all but the last out, allowing four runs on seven hits with one walk striking out 11 batters. The Norse finished with ten runs on 15 hits with seven walks against their ten strikeouts. They were led by Treyvin Moss's three hits, including a triple and a homer run, tallying five RBI.
