Men’s Soccer Heads East to take on Saint Francis

DAYTON – The Wright State Men's Soccer team is back on the road, traveling to Loretto, Pennsylvania for a match against Saint Francis on Sunday, September 1 at 1 p.m. Raider fans can keep up with the action on the NEC Front Row livestream or through live stats.

SCOUTING THE RED FLASH
Saint Francis had a 7-0-8 overall record with a 5-0-3 mark in the NEC, falling in the NEC semifinals. The Red Flash are currently 1-1 on the season, opening the season with a 3-0 win over St. Bonaventure, and recently falling to #3 West Virginia 0-4.
HISTORY VS. SAINT FRANCIS
This will be the second straight season the Raiders have faced St. Francis, with the two sides battling to a 3-3 draw last September at Alumni Field, while Wright State won the only other meeting back in 2019.
LAST TIME OUT
The Wright State men's soccer team defeated Lindenwood in their 2024 home opener on Thursday night. Goals from Edwin Espino-Elvir, Pete Schneider, Cole Werthmuller, and Jonah Williams gave Wright State their 4-1 win over the Lions. Wright State (1-1-0) bested Lindenwood (0-2-1) in shots (11-9), shots on goal (10-5), and corner kicks (10-4). Felix Ezekwuka led the Raiders with three shots, all on goal, followed by Werthmuller's two shots, both on goal. Joel Shaw made his Wright State debut, logging all 90 minutes while recording four saves and allowing one goal.
RETURNING ALL-LEAGUE TALENT
Wright State returns Horizon League All-Freshman Team honoree Henry Hutchinson. At the conclusion of his first season, Hutchinson started nine matches and played in 13 of the team's contests. He logged 720 minutes, tallying 25 or more minutes in 10 matches, with seven matches of 60-plus minutes.
MEET THE COACHES
The Raiders are led by second-year head coach Alex Van der Sluijs. Van der Sluijs joined Wright State as an assistant coach in April 2022, being named head coach just a year later. He put up a 4-9-5 overall record and 3-4-2 league record his first season, leading the program to the Horizon League Tournament quarterfinals. Joining Van der Sluijs on the sidelines is second-year assistant coach Chris Garcia and third-year assistant coach Adam Maloney.
MEET THE SQUAD
WSU welcomes many new faces with 18 newcomers – nine freshmen and nine transfers – to this season's 32-player roster. Of the nine transfers, there are three sophomores and six juniors. The Raiders return 14 players with one redshirt freshman, five sophomores, two juniors, five seniors, and one graduate student.
ALL ACROSS THE GLOBE
Wright State welcomes players from across the globe with 15 international student-athletes on the 2024 roster. Ten Raiders hail from Europe, representing six countries across the United Kingdom, Northern Europe, Southern Europe, and Western Europe. Additionally, four players represent North American countries, and one athlete comes all the way from Australia.
