Volleyball grabs third-straight sweep with Saturday night victory

ATHENS, OH – The Wright State volleyball team closed out its first weekend of action in the same way as the previous two matches, as the Raiders grabbed a three-set sweep over tournament host Ohio (2-1) on Saturday to close the Bobcat Invitational without dropping a set over the three victories.

Wright State (3-0) now turns its attention to next week, where the Raiders will play hosts in the annual Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational. Wright State opens weekend action on Friday night at 6 p.m. against Dayton before a Saturday match against UMBC and a Sunday contest with Bowling Green.

Saturday night, the Raiders were paced by Sam Ott as she tallied her first double-double of the season with 11 kills and 12 digs, hitting .333 overall while adding two assists and a block to her final stat line. Mya Ayro notched her second-straight 15 kill effort in the win, closing her first weekend as a Raider with three double-digit kill performances. Elena Dubuc and Reilly Zegunis each chipped in six kills as Zegunis finished with five blocks and Dubuc added three.

Lauren Yacobucci turned in her own double-double for the first time in 2024, passing out 34 of the Raiders' 44 assists to go along with 15 digs, while Jenny Wessling's 18 digs led all players.

Following the match, Yacabucci was named Bobcat Invitational MVP and both Ayro and Ott were selected to the all-tournament team.

SET ONE
Tight early in the set, the Raiders used a 9-4 run at the midway point thanks to three kills each from Ayro and Ott, along with two kills from Yacobucci, to push to a 20-13 advantage. Following back-to-back Ohio points, Wright State closed the set with five of the final six points behind Ayro, Ott and a pair of Ohio errors to grab the advantage.

SET TWO
Similar to the opening set, neither side was able to gain the upper hand early until the Raiders rolled off nine of the final 12 points in the set to blow open what was a tight set. During the late run, Wright State saw contributions from Ayro, Ott and Zegunis, as all three players notched a pair of kills during the run.

SET THREE
Wright State tallied five of the first seven points and later led 14-7 and 22-14 before the hosts made their final push. Ohio clawed back into the set behind eight straight points to tie the set at 22, then using back-to-back points moments later to get to set point. The Raiders responded with an Ott kill to pull even before failing at a set point of their own, giving Ohio back-to-back points off attacking errors when it had been 25-24. With the hosts again at set point, Wright State turned to Ott to tie the score at 26 before an Ohio error gave the Raiders another match point opportunity and Ott found the floor to close the set at 28-26 and complete the sweep.
